This book is part of the "What-to-Do Guides for Kids" published by the American Psychological Association. While many, if not most children, can, as the book suggests, "�climb into bed, snuggle under your covers, and fall asleep without any fuss or fear�" there are others who dread going to bed because of bedtime fears or an inability to relax. The book combines a light tone and some fun exercises, games and magic tricks with real information that would be useful to both insomniac children and their parents. There is a two-page introduction written to parents and caregivers. The book itself is written for the child. It has magic tricks that help explain the number of hours of sleep children need, games such as the "Famous Fear-Melting Super Hiding Game," outlining steps to fall asleep alone, and exercises such as circle breathing and stretch and sink relaxation, which will help with clearing the mind and falling asleep. The chapters that deal with monsters and bad dreams seem particularly well done. One suggestion is treating scary thoughts like chewing gum, i.e. chewing on them, until, like chewing gum, the flavor is all gone. In this case the clever solution is chewing the monsters by scheduling a monster time where the child thinks about monsters, draws monsters, has his or her parent print out pictures of monsters until they have become as flavorless as old gum. For children with sleep problems, just knowing that there are other children with these difficulties should be comforting, and trying just a few of the fun magic tricks should prove helpful in conquering the dread of bed. My 9 year old child has never slept in my bed and no one has every slept with him. He has always put himself to sleep. He started being terrified of having a bad dream. He would get up MANY times a night. One night he only got about 3-4 hours of sleep. (Normal is 10 hours, for him) My husband and I could not reason with him and in the morning he couldn't tell us why he couldn't sleep, except for the fear of having a bad dream. We went through this book with him over a 2-3 week period. Several nights he couldn't proceed to the next chapter b/c he hadn't "mastered" the previous chapter. Now, bedtime is peaceful. If he wakes at night, he puts himself back to sleep. He's even sleeping 8+ hours at a stretch!!
