The prolific, but now little-known Edwin George Lutz (1868-c.1947) deserves a niche in art history. His 1920 book Animated Cartoons was not only the first book devoted to animation; it had a strong influence on the young Walt Disney and others. Lutz's delightful first book, reprinted here, also deserves attention because after more than a century, it still instructs and delights. With its simple step-by-step lines, What to Draw and How to Draw It can coax even youthful beginners into sketching not only birds, fish, and frogs; but also bald men and pagodas. A light-hearted excursion into art.
