Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
I had to read the explanation of a play date at the beginning of this book to understand what this book was all about. While the illustrations suggest that it is aimed at preschoolers, the text is really designed for early elementary. Ms. Murkoff, author of other "What to Expect" books, talks with youngsters about having other children over to play or going to another child's home. The short chapters include "who will be at the play date, who will I play with, what will I do at the play date, why do I have to share" and so on. There is a brief introduction to parents alerting them to issues they need to address before sending their child off to another child's home or having someone else over to play. All of the advice is appropriate, but the suggestion to parents that play dates be closely supervised is missing. A character dog named Angus is included in the story as he offers suggestions and questions along the way to provide an interactive approach. While some preparation for this activity seems wise, parents should use their own judgement about how much information may be too much initially. Cartoon-like illustrations provide interest throughout. 2001, HarperCollins, $7.99. Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger
