Overview

Announcing Eating Well When You're Expecting, providing moms-to-be with a realistic approach to navigating healthily and deliciously through the nine months of pregnancy—at home, in the office, over the holidays, in restaurants. Thorough chapters are devoted to nutrition, weight gain, food safety, the postpartum diet, and how to eat when trying to conceive again. And, very exciting, the book comes with 150 contemporary, tasty, and healthy recipes that feed mom and baby well, take little time to prepare, and are gentle on queasy tummies.

A departure from its predecessor, What to Eat When You’re Expecting, which has 976,000 copies in print, Eating Well loses the whole-wheatier-than-thou attitude, and comes with a light, reader-friendly tone while delivering the most up-to-date information. At the heart of the book are hundreds of pressing questions every mother-to-be has: Is it true I shouldn’t eat any food cooked with alcohol? Will the caffeine in coffee cross into my baby’s bloodstream? Help!—I’m entering my second trimester, and I’m losing weight, not gaining. Is all sushi off limits? How do I get enough calcium if I’m lactose intolerant? I keep dreaming about a hot fudge sundae—can I indulge? Guess what: the answer is yes.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
For many pregnant women, eating healthy during pregnancy is a catch-22: "The reason you want to eat healthy is because you're pregnant-and the reason you're having a hard time eating healthy is also because you're pregnant," the authors explain. Morning sickness, heartburn, constipation... the list of food-related problems pregnant women can encounter goes on and on. Murkoff (What to Expect When You're Expecting) and coauthor Mazel address these difficulties in a practical manner, with numerous tried-and-true suggestions that will certainly afford some relief for the majority. The "Pregnancy Diet Daily Dozen" lists foods that provide all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients mother and child need, followed by recipes that facilitate consumption of the daily dozen. Sidebars examine "wisdom of the ages" (myths and old wives' tales that may or may not hold water), and a survey will help expectant mothers evaluate their eating habits and monitor their weight gain. The authors address concerns of pregnant women who are lactose intolerant or vegans, advise on what to order in a restaurant, list which foods are strictly off-limits and explain how to read food labels. The book continues through the postpartum period and breastfeeding, making it an excellent resource for new moms and moms-to-be. (June) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

It all started with a baby…and a book. Heidi Murkoff conceived the idea for What to Expect When You're Expecting during her first pregnancy, when she couldn’t find answers to her questions or reassurance for her worries in the books she’d turned to for much-needed advice. Determined to write a guide that would help other expectant parents sleep better at night, Heidi delivered the proposal for What to Expect When You’re Expecting just hours before delivering her daughter, Emma.

Dubbed the “pregnancy bible”, the iconic New York Times bestseller is now in its all-new fourth edition, with over 17 million copies in print, and according to USA Today, is read by 93 percent of women who read a pregnancy book. Other titles in the series include Eating Well When You’re Expecting, What to Expect the First Year, What to Expect Before You’re Expecting (a complete preconception plan), and the newest member of the What to Expect family: What to Expect the Second Year, the must-have guide for parents of toddlers. The What to Expect books have sold more than 34 million copies in the US alone, and are published in over 30 languages.

In 2005, Heidi expanded the What to Expect (WTE) brand online with WhatToExpect.com – the interactive, state-of-the-internet companion to the WTE books, and home to a vibrant, vast, yet close-knit community of 3 million parents. In 2009, WTE went mobile with the WTE Pregnancy Tracker (the most popular pregnancy app in the world), the WTE Fertility Tracker, the WTE Baby Name Finder, and the WTE First Year Tracker.

Heidi’s passionate commitment to moms and babies led to the creation of the What to Expect Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping underserved families expect healthy pregnancies, safe deliveries, and healthy, happy babies. With a beautiful, culturally appropriate low-literacy pregnancy guide (provided at no cost) and comprehensive prenatal health literacy support, the WTE Foundation’s groundbreaking Baby Basics program -- available in English, Spanish, and Chinese -- has helped over 500,000 expectant moms-to-be in need and their babies.

Heidi has appeared on hundreds of television and radio shows, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, the CBS Early Show, Oprah, BBC Breakfast, and Good Morning Australia. She connects daily with her WTE family online at WhatToExpect.com, as well as on Twitter and Facebook.

Heidi and her husband, Erik, have two children and live in Southern California.

    Very informative!

I have never written a review on a book...unless you count my book reports from elementary school. However, this book has been so helpful in breaking down what I should and shouldn't eat that I feel compelled to sing it's praises so that it can help others like it has helped me. I am pregnant for the first time so of course, I have had many questions. I never purchased the original What To Expect book because I felt you could get all the information online. When I started feeling like everything I eat could be deadly, I realized I needed help so I found this book online. Not only does the book do a great job in making me feel less overwhelmed with eating right, almost half of the book is composed of recipes that are very easy and very good...especially if you consider they're healthy! This is a great book for anyone feeling overwhelmed and needing inspiration!

    nerves...

This book was calming to me as my spouse and I are trying to conceive our first child. I had a lot of common questions that took too much of my doctors time and to keep the secret of trying, I couldn't ask my usually reliable mother and friends! So this book answered many of those common and uncommon questions that I had.

    Great Info!

Pregnancy is not the time to wonder how to do things. So glad I had a how-to guide on eating as healthy as possible.

    Informative and Helpful

I bought this book to help me get ready for getting pregnant. I looked at it like a 'diet' book for pregnancy to prepare my eating habits ahead of time. Lots of nutritional and medical info plus good recipes. Good Stuff!
