Overview

An eye-opening look into index funds and why Wall Street's "smart money" investors are leading the way.

This revolutionary new book provides readers with a clear understanding of the way financial markets really work. Highlighting Wall Street's deceptive advertising practices, the author claims the best interests of investors are not always considered and the dismal track record of many "active" stock managers are often hidden from investors' view. The costs of research, trading fees, and capital-gains taxes are such that few active managers are able to beat the market and those who do are unlikely to repeat their performances.

Swedroe lays out, step-by-step, the manner in which investors today can prudently build and customize their "passively" managed and index?related portfolios. Steps include:

  • Developing a personally tailored investment profile reflecting one's ability and willingness to accept risk
  • Building a globally diverse portfolio of "passive" asset class funds
  • Determining the realistic size of the investment portfolio one needs for retirement?plus annual living expenses.

Editorial Reviews

New York Times
If Mr. Wagner and Mr. Winnikoff get a little overheated andMr. Blitzer remains a little cold, Larry E. Swedroe gets it about right.
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Investment adviser Larry E. Swedroe (The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You'll Ever Need) wants individual investors to understand What Wall Street Doesn't Want You to Know: How You Can Build Real Wealth Investing in Index Funds. With clarity and conviction, he cuts through market mythology (principally that actively managed funds--even those managed by professionals--tend to beat market returns), and explains how to apply his fundamental Modern Portfolio Theory to "passively" manage investments and "deliver the greatest expected return for any given level of expected risk." Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
From the Publisher
"This wonderfully iconoclastic book drums home the message that beating the stock market is a loser's game. Larry Swedroe's new book tilts-successfully-at the windmills of professional managers, Wall Street analysts, owing 'the best 100 companies' (or the best ten funds), hedge funds market timers, investment newsletters, and short-term strategies. Once you're convinced by the powerful case the author has made, he then offers seven steps to playing a winner's game. The diagnosis is right on the mark, and his essential prescription-rely on portfolio construction, index funds, broad diversification, minimal costs and taxes, risk control, and time-also comes close to the center of the target: the optimal accumulation of your financial wealth."- John C. Bogle, founder and former chairman of The Vanguard Group

    Very disappointing

This book was recommended to me by a couple of people. I am fairly new to the investing world, and maybe this is what explains my disappointment. I wanted some advice about index funds, but this book just gives you a bunch of boring statistics over and over and over. Not a good read at all. It just was not what I expected and I really wish I would have saved my $25.00. I should have invested it and not wasted my money on this book.

    Premiere investment advice.

Larry Swedroe picks up the threads from his first book to shed light on the misinformation disseminated by the Wall Street Establishment. The facts supporting his arguments in favor of passive management are impressive, as are those which he uses to explode the Wall Street mythology so touted by today's media. Entertaining and informative, the book utlimately provides the framework for the individual investor to personally tailor his portfolio for maximum return. An absolute must-read!

Swedroe book is a 'winning game' tutorial...

Mr. Swedroe has written an insightful, informative, and entertaining tutorial on his common sense approach to investing. Written in easy to understand terms for the stock market neophyte, but with enough depth, detail, and understanding to hold the attention of the seasoned Wall Street trader as well. This book would be a great investment to lead you to even greater ones!
