Overview

Malikah needs a husband-quick. That seems to be the only thing that'll satisfy her nagging mother. And it doesn't help that her younger sister married a handsome, young doctor, the most eligible bachelor in town if their mother is to be believed. Malikah isn't aiming so high. All she wants is someone nice. Maybe then she'll feel her life has some direction.

Mariam has always had direction. It's a necessity where she comes from, the only way to rid herself of the poverty she inherited. So far, things are looking up. Her career is starting to takeoff, and she and Rashad will be married soon, but once his secret is exposed, will she continue to progress or become the type of woman she always swore she'd never be?

Aliya isn't concerned about progress. She's a "live for today" kind of girl. Her mother died 4 years ago and she's been partying hard to numb the pain ever since. She has no plans, no regrets and no ambition, and that's exactly how she likes it-until she meets Langston. He changes things. Now all she has to do is decide if the changes are truly what she wants.

Jaime knows what she wants, but can't get it, thanks to her overprotective parents. They're only trying to shield their 22-year-old from all the world's harm, but Jaime wants to live life on her own terms. Finally, she breaks free and finds herself in a situation she never thought she'd face.

WHAT WE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY gives meaningful voice to the stories of young Muslim women, while maintaining a broad appeal that transcends religion. With no map to lead the way, these 4 friends take a journey into womanhood, and learn the life-changing lessons of love, heartache, redemption and identity.

Meet the Author

Nadirah Angail is a Kansas City native that has been writing for as long as she can remember.

She loves to create stories that feel real, as if the characters are people she's known all her life.

Born and raised in the religion of Islam, she's too familiar with the struggle of being authentic in a world that sees her as "other."

Though her stories are works of fiction, she sometimes channels her experiences into her characters.

She has 2 children that drive her crazy and a husband that restores her sanity.

    more from this reviewer

Great book, amazing characters, couldn't put it down.

This book pulled me in and wouldn't let go.

I'm not sure I could have less in common with these women, yet at the same time I wanted to know all about them and felt for them on so many levels. The author has created a myriad of characters that feel real in a setting that is timeless, facing the same challenges we all face.

I'll be keeping my eye out for more from Nadirah Angail.

    Need a sequel, like, NOW

I really, really loved this book. Honestly, I wasn't that excited to read it because I knew its about Muslims women and I'm not Muslim, but I heard about it from a friend and it was only .99 so I went for it... so glad I did. I could really relate to the characters. Though we didn't have much in common on the exterior, I felt like these could have been girls I grew up with and we would have had similar issues, similar likes and dislikes. Really waiting on the next book!

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it ended too soon! I hope there is a sequel.
