Overview

Dialysis can be a life-saving technique for the individual whose kidneys are unable to remove toxic waste and excess water from the blood. But over time, the process can become both physically debilitating and psychologically difficult. To address these issues, kidney specialist Dr. Rich Snyder has written a complete guide to dialysis.
This book not only provides answers to common questions about the process, but also offers practical advice and strategies, as well as complementary options that can help you deal successfully with the many aspects of your treatment plan.
The book begins with an introduction to dialysis—what it is, how it works, and what types are available. It then goes on to discuss the importance of blood tests, common medications and their complications, and associated disorders. Crucial information is included on natural supplements, lifestyle changes, nutrition, and effective coping tactics. For most people, dialysis is an unplanned and uncharted journey. In this book,
Dr. Snyder lights the path ahead by combining compassion with rock-solid information that can make a real difference in your health.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Osteopathic physician and nephrologist Snyder (What You Must Know About Kidney Disease) arms patients with useful information to aid in coping with chronic kidney conditions that require dialysis or a kidney transplant. The book is filled with medical terminology that, while dense, will help patients better understand their treatment and results (such as how bloodwork is interpreted). Focusing primarily on controlling fluid intake and blood pressure, Snyder discusses a dietary regimen, diet supplements, and caring for emotional and spiritual as well as physical well-being. Snyder explains nutritional factors that he says will help individuals maintain a feeling of health. To draw the most benefit from dialysis, he emphasizes nutrition—not only limiting the amount and types of fluid intake (no caffeine or drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, among others), but also reviews a host of supplements, such as vitamins D and K2, to combat fatigue, inflammation, and other physical issues. More detailed advice, such as weekly menus, would have been helpful. If readers are truly paying attention, moving forward will be much easier. Readers open to Rich's holistic body/mind/spirit approach will find helpful information and resources. (Sept.)
Library Journal
Synder (What You Must Know About Kidney Disease: A Practical Guide to Using Conventional and Complementary Treatments) splits this book into two parts, "Understanding the Fundamentals of Dialysis" and "Taking Action." The introductory section begins with an explanation of kidney function, including basic anatomy, stages of chronic renal disease, and symptoms of kidney failure. Part 1 is a primer to dialysis treatment and why it is needed, and provides a rich overview of kidney disease and the dialysis treatment process. The information is neither reliant on medical jargon nor overly technical. Definitions are offered throughout and key concepts are separated into logical subheadings so they are easy for readers to understand. Part 2 focuses on encouraging dialysis patients to become active members of their own care teams. Medication options, nutritional support, and treatment strategies are offered in the latter half. VERDICT While this book serves foremost as an educational resource, Snyder also succeeds as a compassionate authority to those undergoing dialysis treatment. A great consumer health resource, especially for those just beginning dialysis, this is also recommended as a support tool for family, friends, and caregivers of dialysis patients.—Carolann Curry, Mercer Univ.
