Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
As an obstetrics and gynecology specialist, Dr. Hilda Hutcherson knows that even the best-informed women have questions about sex. In this down-to-earth, no-holds-barred book, she addresses every sexual matter that has an impact on the lives of women. The information is up-to-date; the presentation, clear and frank; and the book even includes a special chapter on talking to your daughter about these ticklish subjects.
Publishers Weekly
In What Your Mother Never Told You About S-E-X, Hilda Hutcherson, an obstetrician-gynecologist and codirector of the New York Center for Human Sexuality at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, explains that attitudes toward sex are usually formed from information gathered in childhood. From her own experience and that of her friends and patients, Hutcherson determined that this problem had to be addressed, since women and men have the right to a satisfying sex life at every age and just need the information and the encouragement to bring it about. She begins with the basics of female and male anatomy, discussing each organ in detail, and including health care and the mechanics of sex. She stresses that the most important part of any relationship is communication between the partners. Hutcherson's comments and strategies are commonsensical and compassionate. ( Apr.) Library Journal
Would that all mothers knew as much about sex as gynecologist and Columbia University professor Hutcherson! Her book, divided into five parts, is comprehensive yet neither confusing nor overwhelming. She begins with a section on female and male sexual anatomy, going into much detail about the vulva/vagina and offering a useful list of "things to do with a soft penis." Part 2 is a basic sex manual that discusses kissing, touch, outercourse, oral sex, anal sex, intercourse, and "enhancers." The next part covers keeping in shape, birth control, and safer sex, followed by a section on sex during pregnancy, aging sexuality, and talking to one's daughter. Part 5 is especially thorough, covering a wide variety of medical problems and psychological issues, from the effects of diseases and medications on sex to sexual dysfunctions. Even with all this detail, the book is a user-friendly and easy read, with sidebars and good illustrations. Although heterosexually focused, it's gay-friendly. This reviewer's only wish is for even more illustrations. If you have limited funds for updating your public library collection on female sexuality, this is the book to buy. I Also Recommend:

A good source of knowledge that satisfies the mind's curiosity...

I enjoyed this book so much, that I bought three additional copies just to lend out to friends so I didn't have to lend out my own. I was introduced to this book through a college friend, and from that point on, I've been hooked. The title of the book is so befitting because the chapters discuss topics I could never talk about with my mother without feeling uncomfortable. After reading this book, I felt confident in knowing what I wanted in the bedroom & exactly how to acheive it.

    Great Understanding

My husband told me about this book. Can you believe a man would do that! Well I finally learned how to have fun with myself without him,'If you know, what I mean'! Woman it's O.K. It made it much better because now I understand my body so I can enjoy it more.

The Best Book Ever Read in Regards to S-E-X

I like the way it clearly defines the anatomy of both male and female along with pictures. The tips are great! It helps a woman feel more close to her body and reproductive organs and also to her partners body as well. I really enjoyed the book and will share it with as many people as I can.

    Knowledge is Power!

My roommate in college bought this for her soon-to-be married sister and ended up keeping it. I read it over her shoulder and was amazed at all the things I didn't know. This book isn't just about sex. Women need this book, single or not if only to know that they are normal or that what they are experiencing is/isn't a deadly disease. As a matter of fact, get one for your mother too.

    Great Info

This book was written by a female gyno who really knows what she's talking about. The book is easy to read, very little technical language. She discusses the female body, male body, birth control, and many other subjects. Great book to read.

    Guys need this too.

I thought the book was a good read and have tried to use these concepts in my relationship with my lady and found them to be useful and rewarding for me as well. I think there should be a companion to this book for men, because like women we need to know the ins and outs of female sexuality, so we will be better lovers and husbands to our lovelorn, but loved girlfriends and wives. Not a sex trick book, but an educational book to aide us in pleasing and teasing our partners to the heights of their sexual orgasms.

    Before Oprah

One afternoon I went to a book store, and searching through the sexuality section, I picked up the book. I sat on the floor and started reading. I am 24 and I felt like I was learning about my body all over again. Realizing I was with out money I was unable to buy the book. Then I saw her on Oprah.. It was on after that. I had to get IT.

    Seen her on Oprah

I had the chance to see her on Oprah and look forward to reading her book in detail. She was great to listen to, and it was hysterical to watch the audience and Oprah's reactions to areas she covered from her book.
