Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Heather Huang, MD (University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health)
Description: This is a collection of patient handouts with information on psychiatric medications.
Purpose: The book is "designed to provide patients with accurate, easily understood information about the drugs clinicians prescribe."
Audience: Healthcare providers and their patients are the intended audience.
Features: The book is organized into sections according to drug classes (antianxiety, insomnia, antidepressants, TCA, MAOI, mood stabilizers, first and second generation antipsychotics, medications for ADHD in adults, cognitive enhancers for dementia, medications for alcohol dependence). Each section is then broken down into specific medications. The section on each medication is a 3 - 5 page handout that includes information such as generic availability, dosing instructions, side effects, possible adverse reactions, drug interactions, overdose alerts, and miscellaneous considerations. Some tables are used. A CD-ROM of the handouts is included to allow healthcare providers to print them out for patients.
Assessment: This is a fantastic collection of handouts that provide complex information in an easily understandable way. This second edition has significant updates, including a new section on medication for alcohol dependence and information on new medications that have become available since the previous edition.
