Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
When you read this book, watch out for the neems! As a pack of creatures from a horror movie, they are extremely unusual. The plot centers on Stevie Diamond, successful 13-year-old girl detective, and how she can discover who is sabotaging the completion of movie thriller, Night of the Neems. When Stevie and her friend Jesse secure parts as extras in the thriller, they are thrust into the middle of a mystery that only they can solve. Throughout the course of the adventure, Stevie's wild grandma, who is supposed to chaperoning both actors, hinders them. In addition, mysterious accidents on the set like a slip causing a broken leg, a shattering mirror that injures the lead actor, and food poisoning for cast members appear to be suspicious. When Stevie and Jesse find themselves in danger, the plot picks up its pace. The author exhibits the skills to offer an action packed, engaging, and brisk book that will keep readers turning pages right up until the final outcome. This is the seventh book from the "Stevie Diamond Mystery" series. 2003, Kids Can Press,

Gr 4-6-In this seventh entry in the series, Stevie, 13, convinces her detecting partner to try out with her as an extra in the film Night of the Neems. Jesse is immediately chosen as an orphan, but an unhappy Stevie barely makes it into the picture as a "neem," which means being covered in blue scales and wearing a faucetlike nose. Jesse convinces her to stay on by discovering that the movie's "curse" is really sabotage. The two suspect various actors and stagehands and stake out places where the perpetrator may be setting up "accidents" in some truly harrowing scenes. Comic relief is provided by Stevie's starstruck grandmother, who is visiting from England and volunteers to be their chaperon. Once again, readers are treated to Stevie's wise-guy perspective and a fast and funny story. While it may not be a first purchase, this is enjoyable fare to fill out mystery shelves.-Tina Zubak, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
