What's Coming for Christmas?

You can see it in the way the snowman's eyes sparkle. Hear it in the voices of carolers echoing in the streets, and in the sounds of children trimming the tree. You can feel it in the warm fire dancing in the hearth. Meanwhile, the mother hen hushes her chicks, the pigs' little tails curl in excitement, and the sheep nod knowingly as all wait in eager anticipation for a joyous Christmas surprise.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The smudgy lines of Hallensleben's soft-focus acrylics capture the tranquillity of a snowy day in a semirural setting, while Banks's text reads like a lullaby, as “something” approaches in the days leading up to Christmas. Banks vacillates between ephemeral indications that something special is imminent (“You could smell it in the scent of cinnamon and spice that permeated the air”) and the signs that escape notice (“No one saw who put the gifts under the tree and filled the stockings.... No one, no one, no one”). A gently thrilling reminder of all the elements that make for a celebratory season. Ages 3–6. (Oct.)
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2–It is Christmastime on the farm, and both the humans and the animals are filled with anticipation. The much-awaited day comes, bringing presents under the tree and a new foal to the stable. The lovely understated text is full of sensory details, and the evocative soft-focus acrylic art strikes just the right balance between realism and wonder. This tender picture book captures both the material and the intangible elements of this special time of year.–Virginia Walter, UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, CA
Kirkus Reviews
The anticipatory atmosphere of the Christmas season is deftly explored in this unusual view of the holiday by a talented author-and-illustrator team. Evocative paintings with bold strokes and an Impressionistic flavor provide an atmospheric window into the life of a farm family as it prepares for the holiday. The farm animals also feel a sense of growing anticipation that a special event is about to occur, and the concluding Christmas surprise is a newborn colt. The muted colors and quality of Hallensleben's illustrations create a dreamlike feeling, matched by the quiet, lyrical text, with its simple, repeated refrains that create a mounting sense of mysterious expectation. Few Christmas stories meld both the Santa and Nativity aspects of the holiday, but this effort succeeds admirably with both memorable art and a satisfying story. (Picture book. 3-6)
