Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Although a birthday is the cause for celebration in this lively little book, there is much more happening. Ten cooks arrive one by one and each has a contribution to the cake. Interaction by readers is encouraged by the addition of "knocks" escalating in number with each turn of the page. Rhyming text, often employing onomatopoeia, encourages young listeners to add their own sounds. A multicultural mix of characters engages readers across ethnic lines. Even when the big surprise emerges in the form of a huge cake, there is yet more to enjoy. Tips for cooking with children, math used in measuring, and even a recipe for the luscious chocolate cake with icing complete the text. What a delightful combination of ingredients in a picture book! Coffelt adds an author's note identifying three of the chefs as her mother, her son, and herself. She has even included her dear old cat, Sapphire. Prediction: children will enjoy this book so much they will not even realize they are learning to count. 2003, Chronicle Books, Ages 3 to 6.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-"In the kitchen, the sunny kitchen, the clock tick-tocks, the faucet drip-drops, the refrigerator hums, and the cook grabs a spoon." One by one, nine more cooks arrive on the scene to help in the step-by-step process of baking a cake. Representing a broad spectrum of ages and races, they measure, mix, pour, and clean up. Coffelt's simple rhymes have a pleasing rhythm that invites repeated readings. Young listeners will have fun counting the "knocks" on the door and locating the black cat in each spread, and all will eagerly chime in on the final birthday "Surprise!" Lively oil-pastel illustrations are done on black paper, which adds texture and outlines the brightly colored shapes. The colorful cooks and boldfaced text stand out against a bright, white background, making the book easy to share with a group. For youngsters itching to try their hands, cooking tips, some kitchen math, and a recipe for "Cousin Alice's Easy Layer Cake" follow the story. This title succeeds as a counting book, as an introduction to cooking, and as an entertaining read-aloud.-Eve Ortega, Cypress Library, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
