Why treat your child with drugs when you can cure your child with food?

Grounded in cutting-edge science and filled with case studies that read like medical mysteries, What’s Eating Your Child? reveals the hidden connections between nutrition and chronic childhood ailments, and gives parents the simple, straightforward solutions they need to help their children thrive.

Discover the importance of zinc. The panoply of problems caused by gluten- and casein-intolerance. How to cure sleep disorders with melatonin, hyperactivity with magnesium, anxiety with fish oil.

Ms. Dorfman, a nutritionist whose typical patient arrives at her practice after seeing three or more specialists, offers parents the tools to become nutrition detectives themselves; to recalibrate their children’s diets through the easy E.A.T. program; and finally, to get their kids off drugs—antibiotics, laxatives, Prozac, Ritalin—and back to a natural state of well-being.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Her patients made the author of this book a celebrity. Kelly Dorfman is a nutritionist who specializes in working with children; her stellar rep has also made her a go-to nutrition gal for the Washington Post. What's Eating Your Child? functions as a troubleshooting guide for parents troubled by puzzling symptoms in their kid's health or behavior. Combining fascinating case studies with findings from recent scientific studies, the paperback helps readers navigate through claims and counterclaims about childhood nutrition. Even parents without major worries can benefit from Dorfman's insights about ingredient substitutions and natural solutions to common maladies. Easy to recommend; inexpensively priced.

Publishers Weekly
Dorfman, a nutritionist who specializes in working with children and who calls herself a "nutrition detective," reveals that many common childhood ailments are avoidable or can be dealt with nutritionally. The author advises parents to observe, analyze, and be curious, and laments that most pediatricians are not especially "food savvy." Using the "binary law of nutrition" (something is either missing from or irritating the body), Dorfman follows clues to uncover the hidden causes of various problems. In one chapter, a child diagnosed with bipolar disorder turns out to be reacting to gluten; in another, chronic ear infections are linked to the milk protein casein. In another, a picky eater is found to have a zinc deficiency, which can cause foods to taste unpleasant. Dorfman explains the difference between allergies and reactions or sensitivities; introduces the "E.A.T. Program" (eliminate, add, try), a method for rounding out the diets of fussy eaters; and emphasizes the importance of eating organic and avoiding pesticides, additives, and food coloring. This fascinating and potentially life-changing advice reveals that nutrition isn't a simple matter of finishing one's broccoli. Food has a significant impact on a child's health and well-being, and Dorfman helps parents ensure that the impact is positive. (June)

Terrific read - couldn't put it down!

The book really opened my eyes to the foods responsible for allergies, mood swings and learning issues in kids. The book was presented in a clever detective format which made it hard to put down. Each case study was a mystery waiting to be solved by the author. Wonderfully told and well written, I truly enjoyed it.

I was blown away by how common these food issues are, as "triggers" for childhood issues, I wasn't open to looking into food as a source of some issues with my child... Kelly's warm, engaging approach and clinical medical background put me at ease and kept my attention. I was blown AWAY by how common these issues are, and how treatable / preventable so many of the things I was worried about can truly be, with changes to diet.
