Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
A young boy, Diego, introduces himself on the first page as an Animal Scientist gathering information about animals that hatch from eggs. He is carrying a small computer. On the next page he calls our attention to an animal chart with pictures of eight animals ranging from reptiles to jungle animals to birds. Which ones hatch from eggs? Lift a full page flap and five of the creatures have eggs by their sides. On the following page Click, which seems to be the name of Diego's computer, looks through the forest and finds coral snakes hatching in the rainforest. Getting out his Spotting Scope, Diego discovers a "Mommy Crocodile" digging her eggs out of the sand. Last week Spotting Scope found "Mommy Macaw's" baby birds and on the last page, using his computer Click again, he spots the largest reptile in the world caring for her newly hatched baby Komodo dragons. In addition to the science lesson Diego, the star of his own Nickelodeon show, also introduces a few Spanish words. "!Hola!" he says, "I'm Diego." Then he explains in English that he is "looking for animals that hatch from eggs. Will you help me? !Fantastico!" The story is encased in a cardstock case, sewn and closed with an extension from the back cover which fits into a slit in the front cover. In addition to the page-size flaps there is a pop-up on the last page. The loving faces of the affectionate Mommy snake, crocodile, and Komodo dragon seem inappropriate, even for young children, perhaps especially for young children. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
