Children's Literature
What is hopping, flying, singing and buzzing in an open sunny meadow? This small-sized book provides a short, scientific description of different birds, mammals, and insects to be found while walking through a meadow. The author/illustrator informs the reader about the nesting, hatching, pupation, sounds, food, size, and predators of ten different meadow creatures¾the woolly bear caterpillar, the meadowlark, the spittlebug, the firefly, the meadow vole, the goldfinch, the ladybug larvae, the Carolina locust, the eastern mole, the white-lined sphinx. Each animal description is accompanied by a full color illustration that combines watercolor, colored pencil, and ink. A nice book for children with a keen interest in nature and creatures. Children who are less enthusiastic about the topic might find the text and the illustrations a little bland. The format of this book is similar to Hunter's book, What's in the Tide Pool? 2000, Houghton Mifflin, $4.95. Ages 4 to 9. Reviewer: Ute Krappen-Clancy
