Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The country is divided into five regions and each of the titles follows a similar format in the series "All Around the U.S." The general introduction is the same and it presents a colorful map that clearly identifies the regions, including the abbreviated names for the states and a discussion of what regions are and why we need them. The focus then turns to the actual region, in this case the southwest, with a listing of the states, landforms, and climate. Within this region there is the smallest number of states, but it is a large region. Some interesting facts are offered; for example, all the states except one border Mexico and at one time the Spanish claimed most of the region. Fact boxes contain tidbits that are interesting and are great for those who love trivia. Parts of this region are arid and it is also prone to severe weather such as tornados and hurricanes. There is a section about the First Peoples which for the most part were the Pueblo, Hopi, Zuni, Navajo and Apache and there is mention of the Trail of Tears. There is a brief introduction to the population, natural resources, major industries and culture. The concluding sections addresses culture, places to visit and the importance of water conservation. The closing pages contain a timeline highlighting major events, a listing of books and Internet sites for more information, a brief glossary for the words bolded in the text and an index. There are plenty of good photographs and it is generally a good introduction, but just that. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
