Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
It is hard not to think of cowboys and Indians when the West is mentioned, but there is so much more as readers learn in this book which is part of the series "All Around the U.S." The country is divided into five regions and each of the titles follows a similar format. The general introduction is the same and it presents a colorful map that clearly identifies the regions, including the abbreviated names for the states. The focus then turns to the actual region, in this case the western region with a listing of the states, landforms, and climate. Some interesting facts are offered: this region is the only one to encompass two noncontiguous states, Alaska and Hawaii. Fact boxes contain tidbits that are interesting and are great for those who love trivia. For example, Death Valley in California is the lowest place in the US and also one of the hottest and driest. There is a section about the First Peoples and among those mentioned are the Chumash, Anasazi, Shoshoni, and Cheyenne; reservations are mentioned for the first time as well as the battle that Custer fought with the Native Americans. There is a brief introduction to the population, natural resources, major industries and culture. The closing pages contain a timeline highlighting major events, a listing of books and Internet sites for more information, a brief glossary for the words bolded in the text and an index. There are plenty of good photographs and it is generally a good introduction, but just that. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
