Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jillian Kobelin
Star writer Katie Woo learns how to write in a journal in this edition of the “Katie Woo” series. Katie brings readers along as she records her activities, thoughts, feelings, dreams, and secrets her in journal. She provides star tips to readers throughout, such as using a journal as a memory keeper, or putting the date at the top to remember the exact day something happened. The back of the book contains writing prompts for readers to begin their own journals with ideas such as favorite books or animals and why. The book also includes a glossary, further reading, and internet resources. Katie’s story is paired with soft watercolor illustrations depicting Katie as a normal young girl with a life full of friends and families, peaks and letdowns. It also includes handwritten snippets from Katie’s own journal. This story encourages readers to write for their own pleasure, to confidently write for themselves. It assures them that anyone who wants to can be a writer! Reviewer: Jillian Kobelin; Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 2—In this energetic series, a young girl learns about many different kinds of writing. Her friends and family make appearances as she keeps a journal, writes poems, pens letters, and more. Watercolor illustrations capture Katie's personality and give life to the stories. The titles look and read like easy readers. "Katie's Star Tip" sidebars complement the narratives by delivering advice about the kind of writing being highlighted. For example, Facts tells readers, "Brainstorming can help you pick a topic." The end of each book offers activity suggestions for budding writers, such as journal prompts, ideas for research papers, topics for opinion pieces, and suggestions of people to write letters to, such as grandparents. Website addresses lead readers and educators to more information and "downloadables."

Meet the Author

Fran Manushkin is the author of many popular picture books, including Baby, Come Out!; Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story; The Tushy Book; The Belly Book; and Big Girl Panties. There is a real Katie Woo — she's Fran's great-niece — but she never gets in half the trouble of the Katie Woo in the books. Fran writes on her beloved Mac computerin New York City, without the help of her two naughty cats, Chaim and Goldy.

Tammie Lyon began her love for drawing at a young age while sitting at the kitchen table with her dad. She continued her love of art and eventually attended The Columbus College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. After a brief career as a professional ballet dancer, she decided to devote herself full time to illustration. Today she lives with her husband, Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her dogs, Gus and Dudley, keep her company as she works in her studio.
