Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dawna Lisa Buchanan
This would be a wonderful text book for people in fifth grade and up. It provides an excellent overview of the history of mathematics and the multiple uses it can have in the world. It is reader friendly, punctuated by lively cartoon style illustrations with dialogue between figures in bubbles to further explain a concept. There is a nicely organized table of contents, with an introduction, an examination of what numbers are and how algebra works. The next sections discuss geometry, statistics, probability and a concluding review of how math was used in the past and how it can work for us today. There is even a short discussion of how math works in music. A glossary of terms follows. End pages include answers to problems posed throughout the book and an index. Internet links are included. Useful as a supplement in classrooms and libraries, this book will also appeal to math enthusiasts, and could open a door for those who are fearful of their mathematical potential.
