Library Journal - Library Journal
D'Souza came to the United States from India when he was 17 years old and graduated after some years as a Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College. Soon his articles and books began to appear, and he emerged as a highly articulate champion of American values, mostly writing conservative critiques of liberal beliefs and attitudes. He worked in the Reagan White House and is now a Rishwain Fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace at Stanford University. In this collection, D'Souza offers his usual cogency on such subjects as the history of slavery, colonialism, racism, and materialism. His voice as a reader is almost without accent, sounding conversational, friendly, and engaging. A distinctive aspect of the author's work is that he examines all facets of the subject at hand-not through an ideologically tinged narrowness but with a much wider perspective that stimulates thought and departs refreshingly from the partisan bickering of modern political commentary. What does make the United States unique in the world? D'Souza ventures into this contentious territory and emerges with lucid expository. Why do so many foreigners long for and scheme and push to emigrate to this country? It's not just economics; it's freedom. We have something unique here, and perhaps it takes an emigre to see it. This is popular political science, not a research treatise, and should find a ready audience in public libraries and current affairs collections.-Don Wismer, Cary Memorial Lib., Wayne, ME Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
