Meet the Author

Jake Oliver is a playwright, performer and freelance writer. His writing has been praised by The New York Times as, "proudly silly and prurient, broadly satirical and filled with sensationalistic gags that would shock your grandmother" and by Paper Magazine as, "goofy, raunchy, diabolically clever… truly Pythonesque" (Best of Theater in NYC August 2005). Jake’s astonishing, first-hand experience in the world of temporary office employment can only be described as vast, absurd and heroically tragic – even tragically heroic. In 2005, Jake received a $5 Häagen Dazs gift card from the Barbara Davis Employment Agency of Red Bank, New Jersey for his perfect work attendance for the month of June. Jake is a graduate of Oberlin College and Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he earned a BFA in Theater as well as a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. Originally from Boston, Jake lives with his wife and daughter in Leonardo, NJ.

FACTAMAZOID: Rat Baiting

In the 1800's, the sport of rat baiting or “ratting” was enormously popular among the American and British working classes. In backroom “rat pits” people would wager on which dog could kill the most rats in a given time. In one variation there was a weight handicap for each dog. The competing dog had to kill as many rats as the number of pounds the dog weighed, within a specific preset time. The prescribed number of rats was released and the dog was put in the ring. The clock started the moment the dog touched the ground. When the dog seized the last rat, his owner grabbed it and the clock stopped. The ratting dogs were typically Terrier breeds, which included the Bull Terrier, Fox Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Rat Terrier, Affenpinscher and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
