Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
Though alligators and crocodiles seem very similar, this volume of the "What's the Difference?" series shows readers that there are actually many easy-to-spot differences between the two reptiles as well as many similarities. Alligators generally have darker skin than crocodiles and can grow to be thirteen feet long and one thousand pounds, while crocodiles can be fifteen feet long and a staggering two thousand pounds. Looking at their snouts is also a simple way to tell them apart. An alligator's snout is wide and round, while a crocodile's is narrow and pointed. The author also examines similarities and differences in what they do in cold weather, how they nest and lay eggs, and how they communicate. Sidebars provide additional details, like the fact that both animals can live for many months off the fat they store in their tails. Large watercolor artwork greatly enhances the appeal of this series. The full page illustrations will engage readers, who will easily be able to see the differences and similarities outlined in the text. The short, straightforward text presents a good deal of information without overwhelming the reader. Labeled pictures at the end recap all of the main physical differences between the two reptiles. Back matter includes a fun facts section, glossary, index, and suggestions of books and internet sites (all of which can be accessed through the series' FactHound site) for further research. K-Gr 3–Each book in this series compares and contrasts the habitats, physical characteristics, location, and lifestyles of two similar animals. The picture-book format is used to great effect as it allows the two animals to be compared side by side on each spread. The bold, expressive watercolors provide the same visual impact as photographs. A single-page, labeled illustration of both animals at the end of each book recaps the points covered in the text. Short sentences and highlighted fun facts make this a high-interest series with broad appeal for both researchers and browsers.
