Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Mother sees that her little Pookie has tears in his eyes and naturally she wants to find out what is wrong. He does not seem to be able to tell her, so she begins with a series of questions which he can answer with yes or no—Are you cold? Are you hungry? To all, Pookie answers no. Then mother tries a new approach. She asks Pookie some ridiculous questions—Did a very large hippo try to borrow your shoes? He responds to this and other outlandish questions with a comment, "That's silly." The ending is pure Boynton, and the expressions on Pookie's and his mother's faces tell it all. Amusing and probably a book that will make any parent's eyes roll. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton
Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton is the beloved author and illustrator of over 40 books, with 19 million of them in print. Since 1975, her well-known greeting cards have sold more than 100 million copies. "Mostly to family and friends," she says. Boynton is also a Grammy-nominated record producer and songwriter. Her books have won numerous awards, including the Parents Magazine Award. She lives and works and goofs off in the foothills of the Berkshires with her husband, whitewater racer/expeditionist Jamie McEwan, and their four perfect children.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

You gotta love this charming story of little Pookie, who's upset for some reason. Why? Does Pookie even know? Loveable illustrations and warm story.

    Great for kids

I read this book to both my 2 month old and my 4 year old niece, both love it. My daughter loves to see the happiness on my nieces face as we try to discover what is wrong with Pookie. When she is upset I go through the Pookie issues until she is smiling. What a wonderful, quick fun read!

Read Once, then Reread again and again

This adorable little book shows when you don't know what has upset your child that trying to find out what happen is not easy but showing you care is. The simple and silly questions, help Pookie forget what made him upset. Little Pookie is some one my 2 year old daughter can related to. She requests this book all the time but especially when she is upset and wants a laugh to make her forget that she lost her favorite item of the day.

    Little Pookie makes us laugh!

What a great story. Three-year-old Ty helps to finish the sentences as I read aloud. When he's acting like a crabby appleton, I just look at him and ask, "What's wrong, Little Pookie?" Then I usually ask him a few lines from the book. He ALWAYS laughs. We just bought this book as a present for his new baby sister, Zoey, who's due any week now.

This book is adorable and worth buying.

This book is so cute. My daughter got it as a gift for her first birthday. She is now a little over 2 and all I have to say is go get your pookie book and she will go find it off her book shelf. She answers all the questions on the book even the silly ones and it really does help if she is upset about something. After we have finished reading she has usually calmed down and wants to keep reading. It is pretty awesome for little ones.

    So cute!

A great bedtime board book for toddlers. A little pig is crying and his mom is trying to find out what's wrong. She ends up making him forget by asking him silly questions. Each page is just a sentence or two. Like "Snoozers" it has words printed in red prompting the child to say his/her part. I read this book in a store when shopping for a birthday present and fell in love with it. I ended up buying it for the birthday boy and my own kids. When I saw B&N carried it I ordered more online for gifts for more friends with toddlers. So cute and inexpensive.

    Great book for toddlers!

We just discovered this book last week at a friend's house and went right out to get it! Our two year old took to the story right away - there are great rhymes - and it fits so well with them fussing but not always knowing why. Yesterday, our son was cranky and I sort of followed the order in the book of checking what is wrong and he started to laugh and was fine. Will recommend to other friends, too!
