School Library Journal
Gr 1-3 Elephants, names, chickens, and sea creatures provide the fodder for the jokes contained in these four titles. Fairly standard fare as far as joke books go, these undersized books rely heavily on puns and short or single-word punch lines, all presented in the familiar question-and-answer format. While elephants and chickens have been subjects of juvenile humor for years, this series also pokes fun at sea creatures and silly combinations formed with proper names, for example: ``Who invented glasses? Otto Focus.'' Illustrations, appearing on every other page, consist of whimsical pen-and-ink drawings depicting one or a combination of the jokes that they accompany. While it is difficult to determine quality in jokes directed at early elementary age readers, these titles do provide some fresh material, no matter how silly. A quick survey of the joke book section can probably answer the question of whether these books are needed to beef up the area. Tom S. Hurlburt, Minneapolis Public Library
