When you roll out pizza dough using a rolling pin, you are using a wheel and axle. Many crafters today use the same method of creating clay pots that Egyptians used centuries ago. They put a lump of clay in the middle of a wheel and turn the wheel while shaping the clay. This is how a wheel and axle work. A wheel and axle are what make a large water wheel turn as grain is ground into flour. Young readers may be most familiar with wheels and axles on their parents' vehicles. Trucks, cars, buses, and airplanes all need wheels and axles to move. This series, titled "First Facts. Simple Machines to the Rescue," presents simple brief explanations about how things work. Each title contains a hands-on activity that illustrates the principles discussed in the book or gives additional information. The glossary contains all the words that are in bold print throughout the text. An index and suggestions for further reading are included. This publisher maintains a web site, facthound.com, that directs children to resources chosen for age appropriateness. Each selection of resources is identified by typing in the book ID. Resources selected are then specific to age and the subject of the title. This management of resources is particularly helpful for this age group. All titles in this series have the same resource management page, and all titles are recommended for elementary classrooms and media collections.

Gr 2-3 - These brightly colored, attractive books discuss how simple machines are a means for solving many practical problems. In language students can read and understand independently, each one explains that simple machines have "one or no moving parts. Machines are used to make work easier. Work is using a force to move an object." The parts of each type of machine are named, and large, clear color photos with labels indicate where they appear. In Levers, for example, the blades on a pair of scissors cutting paper are labeled as the "effort" component, the screw holding them together as the "fulcrum," and the paper as the "load." Inclined Planesshows how ramps have been used for raising and lowering things for thousands of years, and how skateboard ramps, playground slides, and roller coasters provide fun today. The third title shows how wheels and axles are used in the potter's wheel, bikes, doorknobs, etc. Each book briefly defines all six kinds of simple machines and discusses a complex machine that combines several of them. An easy experiment that demonstrates how the target item works is included and requires only commonly found materials. Leaving out the mathematics involved in more technical discussions of simple machines, these books are good introductions to the topics with many examples from the real world.
