Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Poor little elephant trips on a rock and bumps into a coconut tree, shaking loose a coconut that hits him on the head. All of his friends rush to help when they see his tears and the red lumps on his head. They try to cheer him up with flowers, treats, and hand holding. Lifting the folded ears of the wounded elephant reveals that he is still crying. The colorful cartoon renderings of the hippo, mouse, ostrich, monkey, bird, and hedgehog reflect their concern for their friend. The friends try patting hand, trunk, and head (gently) to no avail—again the lifted ears reveal tears. Even puckering up and blowing to cool the boo-boo does not stop the tears; but puckering up for kisses, finally, does the trick. Lifting the ear flaps on the last page shows elephant's bright happy eyes and his trunk pops-up so that the reader can see his happy smile. Sure to generate lots of discussion on how to soothe a friend with a boo-boo, this sturdy lift-the-flap book will be useful for group reads and one-on-one reading with little ones. Friends can and should try to help. Readers may consider what would work for them. It is reassuring to know that friends will try to help, even if their good intentions do not always work. Also useful to know—kisses often bring comfort when nothing else will. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
