When a Man Marries
When a Man Marries by Mary Roberts Rinehart is a humorous novel that explores the chaos and complications of social interactions during a festive dinner event. The story follows a woman who finds herself at the center of a series of misunderstandings and mishaps involving her relationships with several key characters. Among them is her husband, whose jovial nature often undermines his attempts at seriousness, and his jealous ex-wife, whose lingering affections complicate matters. The evening, which was supposed to be a celebration, quickly spirals into disorder due to unforeseen circumstances, including the surprise arrival of an aunt and a missing butler. The protagonist is forced to manage the growing tensions and absurdities that unfold as she navigates the complex dynamics of her social circle. As the narrative progresses, the protagonist reflects on the eccentricities of the characters around her, adding humor and depth to the unfolding events. A mysterious illness in the household adds another layer of tension to the already chaotic situation. As the plot thickens, the situation becomes even more entangled, setting the stage for further humorous chaos and unexpected developments.

About the Author

Mary Roberts Rinehart (August 12, 1876 - September 22, 1958) was an American writer, often called the American Agatha Christie, although her first mystery novel was published 14 years before Christie's first novel in 1920.Rinehart is considered the source of the phrase "The butler did it" from her novel The Door (1930), although the novel does not use the exact phrase. Rinehart is also considered to have invented the "Had-I-But-Known" school of mystery writing, with the publication of The Circular Staircase (1908).
She also created a costumed super-criminal called "the Bat", cited by Bob Kane as one of the inspirations for his "Batman".
