Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Schwartz (Backstage with Clawdio) limns an affectionate portrait of a friend named Artie, an elderly man who shares tales of his boyhood with neighborhood children. Their voices are heard here, urging Artie to tell them about the best food he ever ate, his favorite Christmas present ever, his closest childhood friend, the most exciting day of his life. Relayed in a third-person narrative, the anecdotal reminiscences are deeply personal and immediate, conveying the character of the personable young Artie while effectively invoking a slower, bygone era. Allen's (In Coal Country) accomplished, softly focused art draws from a palette of soothing pastel shades. Among his more memorable images are a wide-eyed Artie spying his brand-new pony tied to the Christmas tree, the pale pink dress in which Artie's younger sister is buried and the thrilled boy riding in an open-cockpit plane. Sepia-toned photos of the youthful Artie are reproduced on the endpapers, subtly reminding readers that some of the best stories are those from real life. Ages 4-9. (June)
Children's Literature
Children can learn so much about the past from older people. In When Artie Was Little, children explore their neighbor, Artie's, childhood through a series of questions. The joys and the heartache of Artie's life unfold along with a glimpse of a time gone by.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2As an old man, Artie sits on his front porch and talks to the neighborhood children. They ask him questions about "when he was little," and he is glad to oblige. He tells them about the early automobiles that were always breaking down and needed fixing at his father's garage; about the taste of the potato chips that his mother made and sold at her little roadside stand, along with her other wonderful foods; and about the best present he ever got "a pony tied to the Christmas tree." He tells them about his saddest memorythe death of his little sisterand about his best memorythe day he saw his first biplane, flown by stunt pilots called "barnstormers," and talked one of them into giving him a ride. It was then he decided to become a pilot. Artie, the author explains, was a real friend and next door neighbor of hers. Faded, sepia-toned old photographs of Artie as a young boy are shown in endpapers, adding authenticity to his reminiscences. The illustrations are done in Allen's recognizable style and use pastels on brown paper, giving a slightly hazy, distant look to the pictures, suiting the text perfectly. Together with the photographs, they effectively convey the feeling of a time gone by. The story is told in a spare, easy conversational style that is good for reading aloud; and the adults who do the reading have a fine opportunity to share their own memories.Virginia Golodetz, St. Michael's College, Winooski, VT
