"A lovely eastern schoolteacher faces the frontier with the firm resolve to never marry a rowdy adventurer of the West"--Provided by publisher.

I got this e-book because I enjoyed the book so much. This is the story of a young woman in Canada who leaves her home city to teach at a one room school house in a less settled part of the country. Right away, she faces challenges as a single woman and a teacher. She meets a handsome Mounty who is very helpful, but also against marriage for a man in his line of work. Subsequent books follow their adventures into even less civilized territories where life is hard but they make good friends.
I really enjoyed getting to know the main characters and their tenacity for not only survival, but to make the best out of a situation, while caring for the people around them.

All of Ms. Oke's books carry a struggle, a message of faith, and a story of love, which every life has. The story of Elizabeth and Wynn captured my heart, just as Clark and Marty did when I read 'Love Comes Softly'. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the rest of the 'Canadian West' series.

I have read all of Janet Oke's books. She writes with a Christian theme, without pushing her religious views down the reader's throat and without being preachy. This is a light hearted romance. At times, it did not seem very realistic, but it was still a nice read. The book was listed 207 pages and about 200 of the pages were story. It was a fast read and held my interest. The heroine was a head strong, a bit morally uptight, upper class woman. She was a school teacher and wanted independance and adventure and was not interested in marriage and family. This was not a popular choice in the early 1900s for a woman. The book was set in the western Canada outback and the scenes described sounded breathtaking. This book would be suitable for females, ages 12 and up. I do not think younger girls would be interested and all males would think it was sappy. I liked this book and would recommend it.

This book is a great read. It is a blend of history and fiction-- giving the reader a look at what it was like to be a teacher in a
one room school house in Canada. Great love story also!

Elizabeth was a young, weathly, eastren school teacher. When her half-brother Jonathan, asks her to come out to the west to teach, Elizabeth is doubtful. There she receives an unexpected marriage propsal. And also Wynn, a Mountie who she finds herself falling for.

Too many of the little side stories sounded familiar: Like the one about seeing a bear in the trail, fixing up the teacher's house, etc.
Lo and behold, the next book I read was "Tisha", which was written decades ago. I had read this book back in the 1980's. It's a very old book, but the fact that I'm reading it for the 2nd time tells you how good it is.
The reason the stories in "When Calls the Heart", which was published in 2005, sounded so familiar was because they are very similar to the stories in "Tisha".
Hmmmm....I suppose you'd have to say I enjoy original stories with fresh ideas.

This is a wonderfully written book about a woman that goes against what her family thinks is best for her because she feels called by God to go West to teach. The love that develops between the main character and the RCMP man is a deep, genuine, God centered love. This is such a pleasure to read. I have every historical fiction book that Janette Oke has ever written but my favorites are the Canadian West Series and the Love Comes Softly Series. These books and this author is so refreshing in an age where true, Godly romance seems a thing of the past and our moral comapss has been drastically changed. I highly recommend Janette Oke, this book, and this series!

I thouroughly enjoyed this book! I could read it again and again. It was very hard to put down and I only did it when forced to! I couldn't wait to read the next one. I may be only 14 but I have enjoyed all the books I have read by Janette Oke and plan to read many more!!! I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good Christian romance from the 1800's!

A strong, independent woman, cute kids, rugged Canadian landscape, and a handsome mountie; What more can one ask for? I got all of the books in this series after reading this one.

This is a nice story. It's a tad too preachy regarding religios issues. Easy read but if you aren't a Christian you may have a problem with parts.
