Meet the Author

Britta Aragon, natural beauty expert, author and entrepreneur, discovered her passion for promoting safe self-care through her experience as a caregiver during her father's eight-year battle with cancer. A survivor herself of Hodgkin’s Disease at the age of 16, she sought solutions for the difficult side effects her father suffered on his hair, skin and nails, but was disheartened by the lack of straightforward information or effective products. Even when she tried products specifically touted for “sensitive skin,” they were often laden with potentially harmful chemicals that actually irritated her father’s fragile skin. For the first time, she became acutely aware of how devastating the side effects from drugs and medical treatments could be. Inspired and determined to help others, she founded Cinco Vidas in 2008, and dedicated her work to her father's legacy. A lifestyle brand of products and services, Cinco Vidas provides expert resources and safe solutions to those experiencing side effects from chemotherapy, radiation or medication, or who experience skin conditions like eczema, sensitivity and chronic dryness. With the goal of fostering prevention and encouraging change, Cinco Vidas also works to increase awareness of potential carcinogens in food, personal care products, and the environment. As a result of years spent working as a makeup artist and skincare expert, Britta lectures on Safe Self-Care for Compromised Skin in the New York area. Her blog, Cinco Vidas, is a popular resource and community support center for those dealing with medical treatment side effects and difficult skin conditions. She is also the author of WHEN CANCER HITS, a hand-holding guide for the newly diagnosed, and the creator of CV Skin Labs, a safe, non-toxic range of products to soothe and repair damaged skin without harmful chemicals. Her book will be released in September 2011, and CV Skin Labs launches February 2012. Both will be available through her website at www.cincovidas.com

Highly Recommended! A phenomenal tool for cancer patients and survivors

As a cancer patient, survivor, caregiver and patient care advocate who has experienced cancer from all perspectives, I have witness first hand the devastating effects of toxic treatments that kill cancer cells and devastate our body long after treatment has ended. I can honestly say that I wish this informative book had been available to me 10 years ago.

Britta's book is thoughtful, honest and comprehensive, written in easy to understand everyday language whether you are reading it cover-to-cover or in bits and pieces. The love and care she poured into the information she shares with her audience is evident in every page.

While this book was clearly written for the newly diagnosed cancer patient and those living with cancer, the useful information on everyday health and wellness you will learn in each chapter is relevant for, and important to everyone.

Whether you are personally touched by cancer, love someone who is living with cancer or are charged with the day to day care of a cancer patient WHEN CANCER HITS will help you make the best possible self care choices for a less "toxic" journey during and after treatment.

For both my daughter and I, the book WHEN CANCER HITS is God send that has become our go to resource for living well as cancer survivors. Thank You Britta!

    helpful and supportive information

Reviewed by Alice H. for Readers Favorite "When Cancer Hits" by Britta Aragon is a tidy little "pick me up" book for those undergoing cancer treatments themselves or for those who are struggling to support a loved one undergoing chemotherapy, surgery and/or radiation treatment. Herself a teenage cancer survivor and caretaker for a father who died of cancer, Ms. Aragon suggests that although physicians are skilled in treating the disease, they are not always readily available to treat the side effects of the treatment themselves. That is what this book is all about. It explains how cancer changes the patient, both physically and mentally. It tells of the emotional cost of the disease. But more importantly, the author provides timely information about what to do when faced with side effects such as skin dryness and sensitivity, makeup and brittle nails. There is also information regarding treating the stress which accompanies the treatments. The author also provides an up-to-date chapter on hair, wigs and scarves which will be of benefit to any cancer patient. There is no doubt in the mind of the reader that the author knows about treating the potential side effects of cancer treatments. I was slightly taken aback by the harsh critique of ALL current market remedies as I felt there was scant research to back up the claims. However, this did not detract from the helpful and supportive information contained within the book. I particularly liked the self-affirmation suggestions as, in the end, it is the reaction of the patient to the process that holds the keys to successful resolution of the problems.

Your Guide to Surviging Cancer - Moving on to a Meaningful Life

Britta Aragon, a cancer survivor, tells of her personal journey from cancer discovery, surgery, and treatment to recovery and living a meaningful life in her book "When Cancer Hits: Your Complete Guide to Taking Care of You through Treatment."

Britta provides tools and guidelines for dealing with anticipated changes you will experience. She discusses skin care, as well as other personal items such as hair, nails care, emotions, stress, and episodes of recurrence. Thought provoking questions, bulleted lists, exercises, and personal stories of cancer survivors offer affirmation, encouragement, and inspiration.

The comprehensive index and the documented chapter end-notes are helpful tools for ready reference, review, and research. I also found the multiple indices especially helpful. These include:

. Biographical Information on Contributing Experts
. Contributing Organizations and a Favorite Resource List
. A Listing of Favorite Books, CDs, and DVDs
. A Listing of Personal Care Items and Foods to Avoid
. A Guide to Finding Safe Products

"When Cancer Hits: Your Complete Guide to Taking Care of You Through Treatment" is an important guidebook for cancer victims, their families, healthcare professionals, family counselors, and clergy.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's guidelines.

As reviewed for Midwest Book Review.

    Live To Read

This book is incredibly informative, clearly well-researched. The book is full of survivor testimonies, instilling that hopeful quality. The reader will perhaps be able to identify with some of those stories as well. The author will become like a friend to the reader, the author has a very gently tone, caring. The author herself was diagnosed with with Hodgkin's disease, the reader can be assured that he/she is receiving complete sincerity and compassion.

This book should help the reader plan ahead, think about options, and cope. The author makes sure the reader knows that he/she has a choice as to how cancer affects him/her. The book can help immensely towards making anyone diagnosed with cancer more comfortable through hints and tricks that most would never think of. The author has suggestions about skin changes, toxins, mediating chemotherapy effects, etc... This book is invaluable for anyone dealing with or who knows someone suffering from cancer.

THIS BOOK FULL OF GREAT INFO..... GET IT

Well today I want to let you know about a book that I find very important. You see as of lately my world has be rocked by that ugly disease Cancer. I have only been personally affected by this disease through several family members. I have to say most of the family members have had good out comes but others have left me devastated at the sight ,sound and yes even smells of this disease as it has taken the lives of my loved ones. It started many years ago with my mother the diagnosis was Breast she made it through that thanks to early detection all I can say is self exams, self exams and self exams. At that time we devoured books to see how to help her. I have to say I wish I would have had this book. It is called WHEN CANCER HITS- YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO TAKING CARE OF YOU THORUGH TREATMENT by Britta Aragon. I even wish I would have had this book three months ago when my father in law was going through his own battle and chose to have radiation. What I found is that the doctors really did not want to educate us on anything. I felt for him they were supplying hope. Do this and ... However I found it to be false hope and was at a loss on how to help as his care taker. I saw this book and registered to win it. I did and I was so excited. Sadly the book arrived three days after his death. In this book it talked about how to help the skin as you go through your treatments. It talks of what products contain so you know where they are safe for your condition sadly we had not a clue and things like deodorant could cause him pain. I loved how she talked about goals. It is hard to have goals at this time but they truly help with recuperation from these hard treatments. The author has personal affirmations as well and some of these would have been helpful to him. I did find this book was more geared to females she has great tips on make up and how and what to use on those bad days when you just feel icky. I found it fascinating that she brought up music therapy. I never knew this existed. Researchers have found the listening to soothing music helps cancer patients with stress management and the relaxation from the music is found to boost immunity. Think about how inexpensive that kind of treatment can be. I know I found that every thing is expensive and had I know I would have played calming music. I was in such a different place that I could have never thought of that and I was not even the cancer patient. This book has so many tips and things to think about that I will be keeping it. I have to say the harmful ingredients in cosmetic have made me stop and think what I am doing to my skin. This book is two hundred and ninety pages just full of info. I highly recommend this book. I give this book five stars. I rate my readings on a scale of 1to 5 stars. This meaning one is the worst and five is the best. To comply with the FCC I must let you know that I won this book from a website called Library Thing. The opinions in my review are mine.
