PreS-Gr 2 --Three siblings have a bout with the chicken pox, and their father comes down with a bad case as soon as they recover. It's their turn to help nurse him back to health in a nicely done role reversal. He misses his daughter's ballet recital and has to bathe in oatmeal to help the itching. The kids are worried, but things pick up as he recuperates and all ends well. Even though the father looks miserable throughout and the children are appropriately concerned, Ziefert manages to keep a lighthearted tone. Adding to the fun are Kalish's watercolor and charcoal cartoons. Together with the simple narrative, they strike the right balance between seriousness and playfulness. Youngsters will respond to this message of caring and togetherness. --George Delalis, Oakland Public Library, CA
