When God Answers Prayer

Overview

Some people are "prayer plodders": They pray not because prayer comes easy but because they believe in its power. Others are "prayer professionals": they are gifted in the practice of prayer; prayer seems to flow authentically and effectively from their hearts. Whether you are a plodder or a professional, you can be a prayer warrior-one whose prayers are powerful and effectual — even efficient.

The simple message of this book is that prayer works. Even if prayer doesn't always ...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Father and son Bob and Rusty Russell team up in this three-part text that explores the foundations of biblical prayer and offers biblical examples of answered prayer. The Russells also brave the more thorny "unanswered prayer" realm that can ensnare even the most devout Christian believer. Bob Russell (When God Builds a Church), pastor of a 17,000-attendee church, describes himself as a "prayer plodder" and candidly shares that prayer doesn't come easily to him. Yet both Russells explore the theological mysteries of prayer-even its power to change God's mind-while circumspectly admitting that there is much believers cannot understand about this side of heaven. Sadly, much here is all too familiar: the customary stories of answered/unanswered prayers from biblical characters like David, Moses and Paul as well as contemporary individuals are trotted out in rather ho-hum fashion. With hundreds of similar books available on prayer, the stories don't do enough to justify another treatment of the topic. One section more original and worthy of attention appears near the book's end, where the Russells speculate about the possible reasons why some prayers are unanswered. A Christian may harbor some secret sins, an unforgiving spirit or selfishness, they say. Or, on a more positive note, God might simply use unanswered prayer to effect internal changes in a believer's life, resulting in a more Christlike character. While the Russells' message is certainly a worthy one, it is unlikely that seasoned Christians will find much here to sustain their interest. (Aug.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

God has blessed Bob Russell with a life much different than one he could have ever imagined. As a young man growing up in northern Pennsylvania, Bob had intended on becoming a high school basketball coach in his hometown. During his senior year of high school, however, Bob realized a desire in his heart to enter the ministry. Soon thereafter, he enrolled in Cincinnati Bible Seminary where he graduated in 1965.

At just twenty-two years of age, Bob became the pastor of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Today that small congregation of 120 members has become one of the largest churches in America, with 18,000 people attending the four worship services every weekend.

Bob and his wife Judy have been married for forty years. They have two married sons who live in Louisville and are active at Southeast, and six grandchildren with whom they enjoy spending their time.

An accomplished author, Bob has written over one-dozen books. He also has a weekly column in The Lookout, a magazine printed by Standard Publishing. A highly respected speaker, Bob is heard weekly on the Living Word, a nationally syndicated radio program. In his leisure time he enjoys playing golf and is an avid University of Louisville basketball fan.

Bob Russell's gift of humor and insight, along with his unyielding commitment to honesty and integrity, will inspire the hearts of those who listen to consider Biblical truths as they relate to life in contemporary culture.
