When Harry Raider, prince of the L.A. party scene, lands in the hospital after a particularly wild night, his billionaire daddy puts his foot down: Harry will go to the Hamptons to dry out or be disowned. Couldn't Mr. Raider's $3.4 billion buy him a celebrity magazine? The poor fool still thinks of the Hamptons as a sleepy cluster of beach shacks. As soon as the news makes it to Harry's childhood friend, preppy haute-couture homosexual stylist Chas Greer, he makes plans to marry the 38-year-old man-child off to the highest bidder. Goodman-Davies's author bio makes much of her own Hamptons youth, but thanks to gossip columnists, America's voracious appetite for scandalous tales of the rich and famous and the one-woman show that is Paris Hilton, there's barely such a thing as East Hampton insider info. Coke-snorting, bulimic socialites and calculating mama's boys act badly enough for a pretty good farce, and while Goodman-Davies's writing can be snappy, mostly it has the panache of a Sweet Valley Twins installment. Party boy from L.A. who never had to grow up spends a long hot summer drying out in the Hamptons-in a dishy debut that feels like a roman a clef. Stylish, aging garmentos Irma and Sam Raider, formerly of Brooklyn, now billionaires in La-La Land, threaten to cut off their 38-year-old life-of-the-party son, Harry, recently saved from a cocaine-induced coma in a Beverly Hills hospital, if he doesn't straighten up. Before Harry even arrives to visit in East Hampton with nebbishy Wall Street trader Freddy Ackerman (son of Sam's former partner) and his down-to-earth artist wife Jessica, matrimonial traps have been set by Harry's former high-school friend, Chas Greer, a onetime male model who has transformed himself into the ultra-suave personal shopper and confidante to desperate Manhattan ladies. Chas's clients need husbands. Fat, lovelorn rich girl Penny Marks wants to be as sought after as her druggie, glamorously anorexic sister Bunny, but she hasn't got the discipline. Horsy old-guard Waspy Milly Harrington, who actually had to go to work at a Wall Street firm to maintain her family's fortune, wants a Jewish husband to replace the love of her life, who jilted her for marriage to a nice Jewish girl and numerous offspring. Chas, moreover, is tired of scraping by and plans to extract a cool million for his matchmaking efforts so he and boyfriend Juan can live in style. Thus, the pins are in place, poised to be knocked down one by one by the childish exuberance of Harry, who's not as stinky as the other rotten eggs around him. Goodman-Davies knows her turf; she sounds all the petty outrages and vulnerabilities of the very rich and very unhappy. Making heavy use of excessive plotting andvulgar, over-the-top party scenes at the close, she manages to match Harry with the one character the reader hadn't thought of. Insipid summer fare for the very bored.

At the tender age of 19, Mara Goodman, left the world of parties with the Kennedy's, debutante balls, Swiss boarding schools and the diamond studded palm fronds of Palm Beach to pursue a career she felt was appropriate for a young lady of her illustrious social background: stand-up comedy. For the next 7 years, Mara performed at Los Angeles comedy clubs such as The Laugh Factory, The Improv, and Bob Hope's USO Tour.

She went on to become an international public relations/media placement consultant in the areas of health and beauty. Mara is also the guest romance expert for WABC Weekend News New York and is often quoted in magazines such as Redbook, Cosmopolitan, Gotham, and Complete Woman.. After spending almost every summer of her life in The Hamptons, Mara now splits her time between New York, The Berkshires, and her hometown of Palm Beach, Florida.

    Just okay--nothing great

    pretty boring-- I put down few times and forces a finish. No strong characters. 2 women with own sep. issues try to win rich man who acts like child. 'Harry' is not a very likable character. You can predict what happens after first few pages-- Read only if nothing else around

    Good Read

    Thought the book was well layed out and the characters were very believable. You either loved or hated the characters as with any story. First non-work related book I have read in years, and glad that it was my first book back into adult reading. Quick read.
