When I Am/Cuando estoy

When I Am/Cuando estoy

by Gladys Rosa Mendoza, Dana Regan

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Rosa-Mendoza has turned out another serviceable, but unexceptional, book in this bilingual board book series. In this title, a group of kindergartners or preschoolers show us their different emotions. We see a little boy cling to his father when he is scared of a dog, a little girl hugs her bear when she is sad, and a group of small children seek each other's company when they are lonely. The children do not possess heaps of character and Regan's illustrations make them into caricatures of emotion rather than actual people. The book does do a good job in showing toddlers' common emotional responses, which they will likely recognize in their own behavior. Rosa-Mendoza prompts this kind of reflection in the final pages when she asks the reader how he feels today. I do not recommend using the glossary as it seems to have been composed by someone with an American accent in Spanish and a Spanish accent in English. This book is volume twelve in the "English/Spanish Foundations" series. 2004, Me+Mi Publishing, Ages 6 mo. to 6.
