Overview

What happens when a sex addict falls for his addiction counselor?

Knox Bauer's life has unraveled to the point of no return. Fighting to fill the emptiness inside himself, he seeks solace in unfamiliar beds with unfamiliar women. As guardian to his three younger brothers, this can't go on...they look up to him in every way and all he’s done lately is prove how messed up he really is. Needing a change, he attends a local Sex Addicts Anonymous meeting, where he finds himself tempted by the alluring instructor, McKenna.

With her newly acquired degree in counseling, McKenna begins leading a sex addicts group where she meets the troubled Knox and her life takes on complications she never bargained for. She doesn't have time for a bad boy who only wants to take her to bed, even if her body disagrees. The fixer in her wants to help, but trusting Knox's true motivations might take more courage than she has.

Quick enjoyable read, but be prepared to read the next one in the series.

I really enjoyed reading about McKenna and Knox.  Although they are not perfect they may very well be perfect for each other.  I knew this was a three book series before I purchased this book, so I did not mind the cliffhanger.  If you don't mind having to read three books to get the whole story I highly recommend this book!  ENJOY!!!

I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review.
I gave this book 5 stars.
This is book number one in the When I break Series.

This is Knox and McKenna's story.

Knox is an Alpha male, dominating and a sex addict. He lost his parents when he was only a senior in high school his mom died and his dad ran off. Leaving him with his 3 younger brothers to take care of Knox steps up and does the right thing. He finishes school and he gets a job to support his brothers, and at the end of the day he looks for comfort in women and sex. When he gets in trouble from having a little too much fun he is ordered to go to a sex addict group. He is not happy about this, but he knows in order to keep his brothers he is going to have to do something he doesn't want to do. This is where he meets McKenna.

McKenna is a counselor. She has had it hard she lost her parents to a tragic car accident when she was young and she can relate to Knox on so many levels. But she is his counselor and it is a line she should not cross. As soon as she sees Knox she is instantly attracted to him and drawn to him and wants to get to know him. Against her better judgement and his they give in and start to spend some time together. She is drawn in by his brothers and also Knox's love for them. He is not what she is use to and is not the like the regular guys that come to her for help.
Will she give in to her desires? And Knox is fighting it just as much as she is. He feels it too, but knows it is wrong. He feels a stronger connection to her then just sex though and I think that scares him the most, will he give in? And what happens if they do?

I really enjoyed this book, I wasn't expecting Knox to be so likable, but I found myself cheering for him and begging Mckenna to give him a
chance. And the thing is even though he uses sex to deal with his life, she has just as many problems but she uses volunteering as her crutch. I think these two are meant to be together and heal each other. They both have so much hidden pain. And just need to have someone love them and know that they are worth it. Knox's little brothers are so adorable and I found myself wanting to know just as much about them. I loved the parts where McKenna would come over and be with all of them and bond. This was an amazing read and I cannot wait to read book two and find out what happens between Knox and McKenna. Thank you for such a great book about finding love where you least expect it.

    Thank you

Thank you for letting readers know that, yet again this is another series that charges for every 100 pages or so. Tired of thinking I'm getting a good deal, to find they turn one novel into a 3 part series, and charge for each. I'm not going to even bother.

    102pgs??

So this is another teaser?! Pay $3 for a short tell with cliff hanger then repeat with book 2 and 3 but pay $4 for them? Are they all so short or just the first one?? I love to read but I also work hard for my money and don't like getting robbed. 100 pages to me seems like worth a buck.

Loved this book! But I will tell you that, it’s not over. Cliffhanger well I think that all depends on how you look at it. I like to think of it as a continuation of the story. (I didn’t have that throw your reader across the room moment) So now its just a waiting game to see what happens next between Knox and McKenna…

This book was an easy read by far a great storyline. Knox being a sex addict and trying to get help, yes he didn’t start out for all the right reasons but he did in the end really realize that he was doing this for a reason, though I still don’t think that he’s figured out its for himself. And I don’t think I completely understand McKenna yet. I know parts of her story but I think that we have just brushed the surface of the damage that she suffers from. Like I said above I can’t wait for when I surrender. I think this is going to be another fabulous series from Kendall Ryan!

When I Break is a great start to a new series. The characters are likable and I enjoyed the story, for the most part. It is well-written but the pacing seemed rushed - especially in the beginning.

McKenna is a young woman still dealing with the tragic loss of her parents. She's completed her degree in counseling and moved to Chicago, hoping the make a fresh start. McKenna is a 'fixer'...the type person who needs a project. She uses work and volunteering as a means to 'fix' other people and thereby ignore having to deal with her own issues. Meeting Knox, a hunky patient in her recovery support group, provides her with the perfect distracting new project.

Knox is a young man who's had to grow up far too quickly. But he's done it willingly and nobly. He takes care of his three younger brothers, works - he's very responsible. To release the pressure of all that responsibility, he loses himself in women. He knows he needs to clean up his act in order to be a better role model for his brothers, but joining a support group and meeting McKenna has him off-kilter.

Both McKenna and Knox are dealing with guilt over their pasts. They each cope in very different ways. McKenna hopes that by fixing others, she'll one day make amends for her perceived part in her parents' deaths. Knox believes he ruins everything he touches, aside from his brothers where he struggles to be what they need. He, therefore, steers clear of any woman wanting more than one night.

When I Break is an engaging read. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the interactions between McKenna and Knox, especially when Knox's brothers were involved, were entertaining. However, there were a few things that seemed a little too fantastical for realistic fiction. The main thing was that I found it hard to buy the unprofessionalism of McKenna, as a counselor, becoming involved with a patient. It may be Ms. Ryan's purpose to show McKenna's weakness where Knox is concerned to further the plot in the future installments of the series, but was hard for me to swallow. I am invested in these characters though and I look forward to seeing both McKenna and Knox grow, individually and possibly as a couple.

I loved this book...this author always gets me

I read this knowing there would not be a resolution to the characters' issues in one volume, but could not predict how fascinated I would be waiting now impatiently for volume two. If there is not a HEA it will be a shame. Knox seems to be finding clarity through her. Please Kendall...make this happen. Kerem.

Knox and McKenna's story is fraught with sexual tension and now

Knox and McKenna's story is fraught with sexual tension and now I'm author-stalking for book 2!

Holy smokes, Kendall Ryan can write some witty, snappy, and downright lust-filled stories!! When I Break is no exception! I found myself completely enamored with Knox Bauer, the naughty, complex sex addict, just like McKenna is. And the sexual tension – off the charts!!! Gah!

When I Break opens with some ugly moments for Knox, ones that immediately made me want to help him. Then we meet McKenna, only to find she’s hiding quite a bit about herself that unfolds as the story continues. I think one of Kendall Ryan’s strengths is her ability to capture two very different voices and move the story smoothly between the two. Hats off to her for that! She also knows just how to get me to fall in love with her characters, making me want so desperately for their happily ever even knowing that there are seemingly impossible hurdles to overcome.

I will say, I was a little hesitant opening up this book because I feared a potential cliffhanger. For those of you like me, the story is not done. However, it didn’t make me want to throw my e-reader across the room so much as I want to seriously stalk Kendall Ryan for any little teaser I can get for book 2 – When I Surrender!! I loved the start of Knox and McKenna’s story!

The synopsis was great, but I was not feeling it when I first started reading. HOWEVER, that changed about 15% in. I became really involved with this book. I was enamored with the characters, their backgrounds. Why they are the way they are. Each of the main charecters, McKenna and Knoz have had a past that has so much pain. Where McKenna is the person who wants to help others as a part to live through her grief and guilt. Knox just wants to forget his pain, and sex is the way to get away from the day to day he lives.

McKenna is the counselor in Knox's sex addiction group. She and Knox start a friendship, They are both completely drawn to each other. What started off as just wanting to be friends for McKenna and a deep sexual desire for Knox turns into much more. As the book continues, you can watch these two fall for each other.

But the past is not all forgotten. Knox still has a problem with sex being his way to get away from real life, and McKenna has no one in her life she can depend on. Except the roommate who is in love with her. What we start to realizes is that both Knox and McKenna are developing feeling for each other but situations are brought to the for front and not all with be ok.

Kendall Ryan has delivered a fantastic story. It was a quick fast read, but I was completely lost in the story and characters. This is the first of 3 books and the ending delivers a gut-wrenching blow, that you MUST read. Yes, there is a cliffhanger, but the read it so worth it. The ending was something I never saw coming. Fabulous job Kendall Ryan, and now I will bite my nails till the next.

I was so excited to see a new release from this author that I missed the part about the story continuing in a second book.
I loved the story and felt very connected to the characters. I cannot wait for the next book!

Another great story from Kendall Ryan…. I honestly don’t think she can write a book that I won’t love.  Meet Knox Bauer….oh yes, you will want to.  Ordered to report to Sex Addicts Anonymous by the court to get his life back in order, what he finds there is more than just a meeting…he finds McKenna.

McKenna is the group leader and although she knows she had a job to do she can’t help but want to know more about Knox.  She blurs the line between personal and professional and what we get is a steamy, angst filled story.

Both with issues stemming from their pasts to overcome will two complete opposites be just what the other needs to make it in this life.  We get to see different layers of Knox, not just the love ‘em and leave em’ guy.  We get insight into what has brought him to this point and the reason that he keeps on going.

    “I’m a sex addict.”

“Should I be afraid of you?”

    “I wouldn’t hurt you, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to
    do some other things.”

McKenna’s overbearing friend Brian, did not rate high on my list of people.  It was obvious that he was harboring his own feelings for McKenna.  He was definitely not a fan of her spending time with Knox but after knowing her for all this time it was unrealistic for him to think that she would “obey” his wishes.

As the story unfolds we watch the beginning of what could be something amazing for Knox and McKenna but their relationship will contain pitfalls and when one truth is disclosed it may just break McKenna.
Yes, you may not like the way the story ends but it’s a series and there is more to come.  I will definitely be awaiting the release of Book 2 in the series, When I Surrender, coming April 2014 to see what is in store for Knox and McKenna.
