Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Children need to learn how to channel anger so that their feelings don't lead to destructive behavior. This book is an excellent resource for parents and caregivers who want to teach children that there are acceptable ways to deal with angry feelings. At the outset, the text helps children to identify anger. The protagonist, a young, female rabbit, is depicted in a variety of situations that create angry feelings, i.e., when a friend does not share, when her brother gets more attention, when her team loses and when she gets blamed for something that wasn't her fault. The engaging full-page illustrations speak volumes. They clearly show how angry feelings, legitimate or not, can be resolved through positive actions, such as taking deep breaths "to send the anger out," talking, riding a bicycle or running, or doing a favorite activity. The illustrations really make the excellent text come alive. 2000, Albert Whitman & Company, Ages 2 to 6, $14.95. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati

    Great Book of Feelings!

My grandchildren love this book. My granddaughter wants to be a teacher so she loves to read it to her younger brother, and to watch her read putting all the expressions into it is hilarious. It's a good way of letting kids see how to deal with anger issues. It's also full of colorful pictures to go along with the anger.

    Helpful parenting tool

When I Feel Angry is part of a series of books written by a child psychologist to help children identify and understand their emotions. We have others in the series, including When I Miss You, When I Feel Scared, and When I Care About Others, but the book about anger is the one I turn to most often. The text talks about anger in a non-judgmental fashion, speaks matter-of-factly about several situations that could reasonably make a child angry, describes what the emotion itself feels like, and most importantly, offers several suggestions for what my daughter can do to handle her anger other than saying something mean, yelling, or hitting. The fact that the illustrations show a bunny rather than a little girl somehow depersonalizes the discussion so that we can talk about managing anger objectively, without making my child feel as though she is in the wrong.

Does it help? I can't speak for my daughter, but it does help me. My daughter is funny, smart, and so verbally precocious that it is easy to forget that she's only four. Four-year-olds, even verbally precocious ones, are still building their tool chests for dealing with anger and other emotional fallout from life's setbacks. This book gives me a way to start helping her.

    Excellent suggestions

An excellent book with easy suggestions that even a young child can understand. Too often children are told to 'do something constructive' without them having any idea what that could be. This book empowers the child by giving them tools to address their scary anger. The softness of Cote's illustrations adds to the calming effect of this book.

    A reviewer

This book was very helpful when addressing anger issues with my son. It provided examples of what might make someone angry. It doesn't chastise for feeling angry and it gives lots of options on how to deal with anger in safe and appropiate ways. I really enjoy reading this to my children and using it to initate helpful conversation on how to deal with anger.
