Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Although one might have some reservations about introducing such a young target audience to the "7 Habits" approach advocated by the Covey family, this title from "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" series seems age appropriate. This book is about "Habit 2—Begin with the End in Mind: Have a Plan," but is really about fostering imagination, albeit as an essential part of planning for the future. Inspired by the author's daughter's elaborate imaginings about what she wanted to be when she grew up, we are treated to Allie the mouse's dreams about all the things she will do when she is big. Allie wants to write a book, go hiking, wear make-up, and become an astronaut—the typical mixed bag of young dreamers. This little mouse is mature beyond her years in realizing—on her own—that she has lots of things that she needs to do first, such as chores and going to school. The cartoon-like drawings are colorful and adequate to support the minimal text. An interesting dynamic in this book is that Allie is put to bed and read to by a grandmother, with no parents anywhere in the story; this is such an increasingly common family dynamic that it would be worth talking about. It is a little disturbing that the final dream image in the book is of grown up Allie pushing a baby carriage, suggesting this is the best thing about being an adult. The short story is followed by discussion questions and activities that can be used or adapted to encourage children to both imagine and plan. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.

Great Compliment to 7 Habits Kids Books

This is a short and sweet book for kids. The illustrations are super fun and at the end, there is a reminder about Habit 2 for parents and kids to discuss. Loved it.
