When I Was Littleby Ana Sisnett, Higgins Bond (Illustrator), Higgins Bond (Illustrator)
While fishing with Grandpa, Noel learns just how different life was when Grandpa was little. Detailed illustrations show Grandpa listening to Fats Waller on the radio, bringing home a block of ice in a wagon, and riding in a Model A automobile after church. My little boy first found this book at the library. He used checked it out everytime it was on the shelf, until I bought a copy for him. I love everything about this book--the illustrations, the text, the style of storytelling, the poignant glimpse of the contrast of past and present, and most of all the fact that my little boy loves it so much. He is African-American, adopted by our family who are Caucasian. I'm always looking for great children's literature with African American boys in them and this is among the best I've come across.
I read this book to my children when they were very young, but I think I learned more than they did. It was some very interesting reading. I lost this book in the move but could not remember the 'exact' title. I found it on the net and now I'm glad that I can repurchase it and share it again with my children
