Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Jack, the canine hero of four previous wordless adventures, is chained outside his doghouse one starry night when small robot visitors arrive in a spaceship. They cavort around the doghouse and unhook Jack's chain so he can join them in play. But when they attach Jack's chain to their spaceship so that he can go along with them, Jack is not willing to go. He manages to slip his collar. Later, when his boy comes to check on him, Jack is there to greet him with pleasure. The story begins on the front endpages as the boy chains the dog to his doghouse. Across the title pages we see Jack's house and his master's, and close examination reveals the tiny spaceship up in the sky. The arriving robots make merry like circus clowns. The appealing characters—even the robots—are depicted as naturalistic in a peaceful nighttime setting. The book's small size is ideal for visual storytelling for the very young. PreS-Gr 2—When Jack is put out for the night, something extraordinary happens. As the pup looks longingly at his family inside the house, out of the sky comes a flying blue car packed with robotlike visitors. These aliens make quick work of turning Jack's doghouse into a play house as they lounge on his blanket, overturn his water dish, and leap from the roof. The real fun begins when they unhook Jack's leash and explore the yard. The pup and his newfound friends dig in the sandbox and swim around in the pond. The night visitors like him so much that they want to take him back with them, but he manages to slip out of his leash before he can be whisked into the sky and is reunited with his young owner. Schories has created another wordless story that is easy to follow and has a timeless quality. The illustrations are full of whimsy, and the joy of both Jack and the visitors is evident as they frolic across the pages. Pair this with Nina Laden's The Night I Followed the Dog (Chronicle, 1994) for a storytime that will have listeners imagining what their own pets may get into when they are not around.—Stacy Dillon, LREI, New York City
Kirkus Reviews
As a follow-up to Schories's previous wordless book Jack and the Night Visitors (2006), a boy takes his dog, Jack, outside and hooks him up to his leash by his doghouse. When the boy goes back inside, a spaceship full of little robot "night visitors" lands next to Jack. The robots tumble out and encourage Jack to play with them. They unhook his leash, and page by page readers follows their antics. They roughhouse in the sand box, splash in the pond and make general mischief. In a surprising moment at the end, the robots hook Jack's leash to their spaceship and try to take him with them. Luckily his leash slips off his neck, and the spaceship disappears. Jack's owner comes back out, puzzled, to see Jack barking at the sky without his leash on. The cheerful illustrations clearly narrate the story, and Jack couldn't be cuter. The possibility of abduction by leash, however, rings an odd note. Still fun, quirky and easy to follow for pre-readers. (Picture book. 2-5)
