When James Allen Whitaker's Grandfather Came to Stay

When James Allen Whitaker's Grandfather Came to Stay

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 1-3 A concept book that deals with the complex problem of elderly parents living with their married children. James Allen's grandfather tries to stay busy and become involved in activities in his daughter's North Carolina home, but he misses his own home in Massachusetts too much and decides to return there. The portrayal of the need of the elderly to maintain independence and make meaningful contributions provides the strength of the book. Although an image of a loving family is presented, the characters are one-dimensional and the story is told in a detached, uninvolving tone. The line drawings in black, white and orange support the story; however, there are many double-page spreads that have no illustrations. Functional. Phyllis K. Kennemer, Green Mountain Elementary School Library, Lakewood, Colo.
