Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Kennedy devotees of all ages will pore over Coulter's (In the Kennedy Style) handsomely designed photo-essay on these celebrated siblings' lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Opening with the 1961 arrival of the first young family to inhabit the White House in 50 years, the narrative balances an objective perspective with the voices of Caroline, John and their parents, reconstructing conversations and musing on the children's reactions to events. The author also includes actual quotes (some excerpted from previously published works) by Kennedy friends and former White House staff members, ably tailoring her text to the target audience. Coulter focuses on such topics as the family pets and how the presidential family celebrated holidays, birthdays and vacation time. Sidebars offer contrast to the cozy goings-on in the White House, chronicling concurrent world events, including the space race, the Cold War, the civil rights movement and the Cuban missile crisis. Yet the highlight of this affecting chronicle is surely its copious selection of color and black-and-white photographs, which include familiar images and never-before-published shots; they range from formal portraits to family snapshots, reproduced with fraying edges for an effective, authentic look. Most endearing--and heartbreaking--are the numerous depictions of the president spending time with his clearly beloved offspring. Ages 8-12. (Oct.) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
This superbly written book details a period in history that still holds many cherished memories for a large number of Americans—the period when Caroline and John Kennedy, Jr. resided in the White House. During the two and a half years that John F. Kennedy and his family lived in the White House while he served as President of the United States, the children almost drew more attention than their father. In this charming book, the photographs are almost unnecessary for Americans who were old enough to vote in the Kennedy era, as the images are stamped into their memories forever. What is delightful about this book are the specific accounts of Caroline and John's daily lives, providing a new and refreshing perspective compared to the glossed-over facts that have been heard a million times. Also carefully meshed into the text are details about some of the most important events in American history, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis. Despite the appeal this book may have to adults, many children may not initially show as much interest due to the fact that they do not relate to Caroline and John or have any memories of their time in the White House. That aside, it still offers an intimate peek inside the White House walls, which may intrigue children enough that they will be drawn to the story just the same. 2000, Hyperion Books for Children, $19.99.
