When Kumbaya Is Not Enough: A Practical Theology for Youth Ministry

( 1 )

Overview

"Writing with the lens of a theologian, the heart of a pastor, and welcome doctrinal breadth, Dean Borgman has provided a 'field book' of pastoral theologies that take seriously the social systems shaping the lives of adolescents--never mind that Borgman knows more about youth culture than anybody alive. This book is a significant step toward the long-awaited conversation about theology and youth ministry in postmodern culture."--Kenda Creasy Dean, professor of youth, church, and culture, Princeton Theological Seminary

    Practical Theology at Last

This book was not what I expected. Usually, books on Youth Ministry remind us of important things like thinking long-term, perserverance, avoiding burnout, and the special place God has for young people -- great stuff, nice and easy to read. Dean Borgman, on the other hand, provides us with the depth youth ministry needs so badly -- the depth that gives us the strength to think long term, persevere, avoid burnout, and minister to youth of all situations. I was both inspired and challenged by this book. He raises all of the important questions that we must answer for ourselves to minister effectively. Everyone who works in youth ministry should read it.
