Overview

For people whove worked hard to overcome an addiction or adopt a healthy, positive lifestyle, a new addiction or a second descent into illness can also represent personal failure. Even more disturbing to those of us facing a repeated crisis is the initial impact it may have on our faith and relationship with God. When we find ourselves facing again the very thing that weve counted on God to prevent, we can feel betrayed. Shock, disbelief, rage, blame-all these feelings can come to bear in us.

These pages explore all of these feelings and examine how people in the grip of repeat tragedy experienced the event, faced their circumstances, learned to cope and found their way to a stronger faith and deeper trust in God. Using life stories, biblical profiles, and illustrations from our culture, each chapter will define and describe a stage or emotion in the experience of a second tragedy. At the end of each chapter are a prayer conversation with God, questions for reflection, suggested Bible readings, and activities designed to assist in dealing with return tragedy.

This warm and welcoming book is the perfect companion for anyone experiencing that second strike of lightning.

Marci Alborghetti is the author of 12 Strong Women of God (Twenty-Third Publications) and is a contributor to Daily Guideposts as well as the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.

Editorial Reviews

Leslie Santamaria
When Lightning Strikes Twice offers help for those facing multiple hardships. Catholic writer Marci Alborghetti, who battles melanoma, says subsequent strikes of adversity present unique challenges to and opportunities for faith. She recounts the stories of people who have experienced a variety of trials, including illness, death, abuse and poverty, and suggests spiritual transformation as a response to suffering.

Evangelical readers might disagree with the books discussion of being born again, which is presented as more of a lifelong process than an event and as something individuals elect to do. However, Alborghettis fine writing and the touching testimonies she presents will remind readers that they are not alone and will encourage them to see suffering as an opportunity to seek God and exercise faith.

What People are saying about this

Joni Woelfel
Through sharing her story and that of others, Alborghetti has written an engrossing, colorful book that takes the reader through a journey of honest emotions. In the extraordinary conclusion, she writes:"we may learn to see our repeated adversities as repeated opportunities to yield and yearn toward God. At times it will be extremely difficult, even grueling: just look at what Peter went through. Then look at what he became. With God, for every second (third, fourth, or seventh times seventieth) strike, there is a corresponding new chance. Take it."

This book represents a victory of Alborghetti, another triumph as an author following her previous provocative title 12 Strong Women of God. I recommend When Lightning Strikes Twice for individual reading, support groups, and as a resource for pastoral ministers.
