Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Moon discovers the joys of life on earth one night, as he explores the fields, takes a cow for a spin, then window-shops and dances with her. The angry farmer sends them back to their proper places as the night and the mystical, memorable adventure, related in verse, come to an end. Brown's double pages glow with a friendly, nighttime aura that evokes the happiness shared by the odd couple. The moon has a casually clothed human body with an oversized moon head, while the cow is a bit scrawny but comfortable when walking upright wearing only a cowbell. The quiet night scenes are set with just the necessary props and details—the empty town street, a few dreamy trees. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will go to breast cancer research in memory of Smith's death. 2001, HarperCollins, $15.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-This whimsical story captures an evening when Moon inexplicably falls to Earth and explores the environs of a small town in the company of an endearing cow. They explore until dawn, when the farmer sends both back to their rightful places. Gently humorous touches, such as Cow and Moon admiring the perfect half-moon slices of cheese displayed in a shop, Moon falling in love with a blinking sign, and his delight in seeing the world sideways and close-up instead of from above, are fresh and light. However, the rhyming text does not always scan, some lines work pretty hard to keep both meaning and meter in mind, and the farmer's scolding of the two friends at the end conflicts with the quiet theme of the rewards of seeing things from a different point of view. Still, Brown's watercolor illustrations glow with Moon's reflected light and shapes swirl across the page and around the nighttime action while the palette lightens as morning approaches. Youngsters may see nighttime in a new light.-Susan Hepler, Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, VA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
The Moon has taken many an excursion to Earth in picture books, but never has he had a better time. Having always had only a view from above, Moon is delighted upon landing to learn that horses have knees; then, accompanied by a friendly cow, he sails into a sleeping town to window shop, falls in love with a blinking hotel sign, and dances with his bovine companion until dawn. Brown (Stella's Dancing Days, p. 178, etc.) depicts Moon as a comfortably dressed, round-headed gent with widely set dot eyes and a contagious smile—a smile that survives even the Farmer's remonstrance: " ‘Moon!' he cried. ‘This isn't right! / Cow, how dare you roam! / A moon belongs in the sky at night, / And a cow belongs at home.' " Maybe so, but Moon is last seen winking and grinning warmly down from the sky, a celestial invitation to share happy memories. (Picture book. 6-8)
