They present examples of and advice related to various types of trauma, including sexual assault, serious accidents, natural and human-made disasters, and combat, and provide family members with useful information, support, and pragmatic ideas. The emphasis is on friends and family of trauma survivors, who are indirectly but seriously affected by the trauma. The book explains the effects of trauma on survivors and the people surrounding them, what the latter can do to help themselves and the survivor, how to decide how much to invest to help the victim, and methods of communicating to bring families closer together as they struggle with the aftermath of the traumatic event. The authors explain the positive changes that can occur in trauma survivors and their loved ones. Meet the Author

Claudia Zayfert, PhD, a clinical psychologist, is an internationally renowned expert in cognitive-behavioral therapy who has worked with trauma survivors for over 20 years. She is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School and Director of the Anxiety Disorders Service at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
 
Jason C. DeViva, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in the VA Connecticut Health Care System, where he works extensively with veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr. DeViva is on the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine. He has treated both veterans and civilians with posttraumatic stress disorder and related problems for over a decade.

    I found this book very informative and helpful. If you are close to someone suffering from PTSD, this book will help you understand what they are going through. It also offers strategies for what you can do to support the person and yourself.  It is straight forward and realistic. If you are looking for some guidance on how to work through PTSD with someone you love, you will find this book very helpful.

    Very Good info

    Covers a wide range of information. My 10 year old child has suffered with school bullies for 6 long years. He reached the end of his rope and i've done as much as a mother could. I'm hoping to find some resolution of the problem now that i am homeschooling him.
