K-Gr 2-- A memory-evoking collection of scenes that not only lets readers see summer, but also hear, smell, taste, and feel it as well. This photo essay begins with the first day of summer vacation as children stand with report cards in hand waiting for the bus to take them home to a season of roller skating, running through the sprinkler, picking strawberries, a visit to the farmer's market, fireworks on the Fourth of July, a day at the beach, and play in a rushing stream. Parades, fairs, baseball, picnics, lemonade stands, ice-cream cones, and amusement parks are among the scenes pictured; all feature multiracial boys and girls. Other choices might be Poems for Summer (Steck-Vaughn, 1991) or Moncure's In Summer (Child's World, 1985), but Maass's skill as a photographer sets this one apart. A great story or discussion starter for back-to-school week. --Dot Minzer, North Barrington School, Barrington, IL
