Love, hate, ambition, greed, lasciviousness--human nature is laid bare in this story about the fall of the grandest house in Hebron, Georgia. Following the sudden death on the same night of her infant son and her rich and powerful husband, Ada McCallum, too young and too beautiful, must assume control of a vast empire and make her way in a world of men at war, at home and abroad. Strong willed Ada, a twentieth-century Scarlett O'Hara, succeeds in business and in love, but her behavior can be reckless and her choices unwise. Local newspaper editor and McCallum family friend Carl Goodman narrates Ada's life and reveals dark secrets. He also chronicles race relations, ghost sightings, and happenings in and around Satilla County.

What a captivating historical drama based in the old South! This book takes place in South Georgia from 1914-1918. The era of the Great War, the end of Long-Leaf Yellow Pine, and the end of Cotton as King. This book was the first book published in the Satilla County Collection and once I read it I was hooked. I am so thankful the author continues writing about Satilla County today. In this book he introduces us to the beautiful Ada McCallum, a young widow determined to succeed in life when faced with a man's world. What a life Ada led! Read it, you won't be disappointed
I really liked this book! Do you enjoy reading books by talented writers that portray the culture and history of an area, while telling a good story at the same time? Then, you will love this book by Oscar Patton, based in south Georgia. This is his first book, but I hope not his last!
