Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Ava Ehde
This attractive, informative, and approachable book highlights the true, heart-wrenching stories of young men and women who are the victims of eating disorders. Body image and self-perception are often skewed by the media, and the result is more than nine million teenagers with eating disorders in the United States alone. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are just the two more commonly recognizable forms of eating disorders. There are many others, and their effects are not always obvious. Highlighted here are warning signs, dangerous physical and psychological side effects as well as treatment options. In addition to the introduction, which describes a debilitating day in the life of an eating disorder victim, there are five powerful chapters with accompanying illustrative photos. Each section demonstrates the impact of eating disorders and begins with a breakdown in the form of a chapter menu. There are Little Bites, which are facts or statistics, such as "There are three billion women who don't look like supermodels and only eight who do." There are also Weighty Words, which are more comprehensive facts that break down the common fallacies and are scattered throughout the text. The appendixes include a To Find Out More section with books, online sites, and organizations and contact information, and About the Author. Although designed for the circulating collections of both public and middle and high school libraries, this book also has value as a classroom resource or for assignment use.

Gr 7 Up-This accessible guide to the symptoms and effects of eating disorders also includes numerous case studies of various individuals who have experienced living with these challenging conditions. Orr provides a solid factual background, clearly discusses the behaviors that lead to the development of eating disorders, and offers suggestions on how to alter attitudes in order to promote a healthy lifestyle. Written in a reader-friendly tone, the book does a good job of presenting the psychological aspects of these diseases and of sympathizing with the young people who are wrestling with them. The attractive layout features pull quotes, boxes containing additional facts, bulleted paragraphs that summarize information, and black-and-white photos. Documented quotes from physicians and other professionals appear throughout. Readers who are suffering from eating disorders will feel comforted and hopefully inspired to seek more support, while those who are trying to learn more about the topic will come away with a clearer understanding of its complexities.-Kristen M.
