Fiona Apple may have been grouped in with the other female singer/songwriters who dominated the pop charts in 1996 and 1997, but she stood out by virtue of her grand ambitions and considerable musical sophistication. Even though her 1996 debut Tidal occasionally was hampered by naiveté, it showcased a gifted young artist in the process of finding her voice. Even so, the artistic leap between Tidal and its long-awaited 1999 sequel When the Pawn Hits... is startling. All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
It's evident that not only have Apple's ambitions grown, so has her confidence -- few artists would open themselves up to the ridicule that comes with having a 90-word poem function as the full title, but that captures the fearless feeling of the record. Apple doesn't break from the jazzy pop of Tidal on Pawn, choosing instead to refine her sound and then expand its horizons. Although there are echoes of everything from Nina Simone to Aimee Mann on the record, it's not easy to spot specific influences, because this is truly an individual work. As a songwriter, she balances her words and melodies skillfully, no longer sounding self-conscious as she crafts highly personal, slightly cryptic songs that never sound precocious or insular. With producer Jon Brion, she created the ideal arrangements for these idiosyncratic songs, finding a multi-layered sound that's simultaneously elegant and carnival-esque. As a result, Pawn is immediately grabbing, and instead of fading upon further plays, it reveals more with each listen, whether it's a lyrical turn of phrase or an unexpected twist in the arrangement; what's more, Apple has made it as rich emotionally as it is musically. That's quite a feat for any album, but it's doubly impressive since it is only the second effort by a musician who is only 22 years old.

No time to write reviews, BUT....

I had to make an exception for this artist. I found her by accident on my Pleasantville CD. I didn't know who she was, but found myself going back over and over again to listen to Fiona Apple sing Please Send Me Someone To Love, so I finally got her CD's, and the quality of her talent is staggering. Her songs really do reveal wonderful nuances the more you listen. In fact, I can't stop listening to some of them. It's been a wonderful experience! Please, more soon!

Love it so much I bought it twice!

I had my CD's stolen recently. There were about 50 of them so I couldn't replace them all but I simply could not live without my Fiona CD's so I bought them again! She is without a doubt one of the most original and inspiring artists out there. She doesn't put on any airs, she just does her thing and it comes out fantastic. I cannot wait till she comes out with another CD.

    Excellent Album

Fiona Apple combines good lyrics with interesting musical instruments to make some powerful music. Also, where as many artists sound only good on cds, she sounds great, if not better live.

Fiona's follow-up is better than ever

Fiona Apple has always been a favorite artist of mine. I purchased Tidal when it was released, as I did with When the Pawn... Her emotional style is very appealing to my ear, as are her raw lyrics. She is second only to Tori Amos for me!

    BEST CD EVER!!!!

This singer has prooved herself to be the best singer out there. Her silky voice, funky rhythms have captured me, and now I am one of her greatest fans. Her songs have different themes to them. They tell a story. And with her powerful voice, you can't help but listen to each and every one attentively. She has a bright future ahead of her, and I think the music will always be a part of her, and she will always be apart of the music.

She Does it Again with Ease

When I bought Fiona Apple's new album, I didn't give it much play time in my CD player. I thought nothing could top Tidal, her first amazing disc. But after going to her concert a week ago, When the Pawn... is the only thing in my stereo! The lyrics and sounds are mesmerizing, the music is real and raw, and Fiona never ceases to fascinate me with just being herself.

So keep on calling me names, keep on keep on.....

The only word I can use to describe this album is AMAZING. It's so real, Fiona Apple doesn't hold back. Her lyrics have had me in tears on more than one occation. But they have also had me singing/screaming at the top of my lungs and laughing with pure happieness. My friends and I have connected to this album in an increadiable way, and her lyrics have helped us through many a problem. I have recently seen her in concert and she is a very powerful and intelegent woman with music that can move me like no other.

Fiona Apple kicks a#% even more than be4

I love all the new songs I've heard. I didn't expect the cd to be that great so I didn't check it out when it was released a few months ago. But then I saw Fiona Apple on Saturday Night Live and I was amazed. Her dancing is awesome too. This cd has a different sound than all the other music out there and that is what's really appealing. I love how it's sort of bluesy, but not laid back. It has this confrontational style that's like rock. I'm so glad Fiona apple didn't do a girly, cutesy, innocent me album. I can't wait to buy it!

    The Best Message Yet

Any woman who has tried a chance at love only to find the next day her heart lying in the road for a steamroller to flatten it and distroy the chance of ever loving again can relate to Fiona's powerful message. Her albums always display the felling of a love broken and the strength to regain self-respect, everything always ends just fine. This is to anyone who feels trampled on by society. Feel better.

    An Apple a Day...

I know what everyone says about the title, but I think it's a smart way to differentiate oneself from the common whiny pop female. And isn't that exactly what Fiona Apple has been doing? Her music on both Tidal and When the Pawn... is more than just adolescent complaints, its a zap of self psychoanalysis. Listening to her music is like getting slapped in the face then having your hair smoothed back into place. Bravo, and thanks to Fiona for another great one!
