Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Silverman
If mice can play when the cat's away, then it's only fair that cats play when their humans are on vacation. At least that's the way the two ginger cats have it figured...and play they do! These are two cats that really know how to party! The exploits of these party animals are brought to life in witty watercolors that frolic among the simple words that tell the tale. What an enjoyable romp for cat lovers of all ages. But baby-sitters beware! Kids might get some ideas when their parents are out for an evening.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A whimsical look at a compelling theme for young children-what cats do when their people are away. Magnus and Lulu, two ginger tabbies, revel in their owners' weekend absence. They invite all their feline friends over for nocturnal dance parties, wrestling competitions, video sessions, and other gluttonous fun. Of course, when the family returns from their vacation, they find Magnus and Lulu all curled up in their basket, innocently asleep. Unfortunately, Birch's cartoony art is uninspired and displays some inconsistencies in the depictions of the animals. Overall, though, this book offers an amusing spin on what happens ``when the cat's away.''-Elizabeth Hanson, Chicago Public Library
Ilene Cooper
Who hasn't wondered what pets do when their owners are on vacation? Jungman provides the suspected answer in this riotous look at how the cats play when their people are away. Two ginger-colored cats, Magnus and Lulu, seem indifferent when the family heads off on a trip, but inside they're quivering with excitement. Magnus has it all planned. The first night, the cats in the neighborhood troop over for a dance party; the second night, there's an all-night cartoon fest featuring Tom and Jerry (cheers for the cat, boos for the mouse); the next evening sports a wrestling competition pitting the local felines against each other; then comes a cat-singing contest, which Lulu wins because her song is so sad it makes everyone cry; and finally, there's a pot-luck supper (no cans allowed). Using foresight, Magnus and Lulu and their friends do a masterly cleanup job, so that when the family returns and asks if they've been missed, the cats can look bored, curl up, and fall asleep. Birch, who obviously has met a cat or two, provides delightful pen-and-watercolor art that brings out all the humor of the text. Whether it's cats dancing cheek to cheek on an armchair or Lulu, a rose behind her ear, strumming her guitar, there's always something to look at. Funny stuff.
